UC Golden Eagles eNewsletter

January  2, 2008 through January 10, 2008

UC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Golden Eagles won both games in last weekend's Red Roof Inn Classic, hosted by WVSU and UC. Emily Jones (5-10, Sr., G, Brecksville, OH) was named the Most Valuable Player of the Red Roof Inn Classic as Charleston posted impressive double-digit victories against Carson-Newman and Shippensburg...The senior averaged 19.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.0 steals per game in the two wins...She connected on 12 of 23 field goals, including a 7 of 12 effort from three-point range...Jones also sank 7 of 9 free throw attempts.

UC rolled over Shippensburg (Pa.) 68-51 on Saturday and blasted Carson-Newman (Tenn.) 79-58 on Sunday.

"I was just thrilled tonight,'' Winn told the Charleston Gazette after the Carson-Newman victory. "I'm excited finally. Tonight was the first time it looked like Golden Eagle basketball. I had been thinking this would be a really long season, and now we need to keep it going. Everybody's being more aggressive. We had looked dumb until tonight.''

Jones, who hit 9-of-14 shots overall, had five rebounds and three assists against C-N.

"Tonight she played like she's capable of playing,'' said Winn. "She hasn't shot the ball well, but now we're moving the ball better and sharing the ball, and now she's catching the ball and she doesn't have a defender on her.''

WVIAC action begins this week as the Golden Eagles are scheduled to travel to Alderson-Broaddus on Thursday Jan. 3 and come back home to play host to Ohio Valley on Saturday Jan 5 and Bluefield State on Thursday Jan. 10. Both home games tip off at 5:30 p.m.

UC MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Golden Eagles are off until January 10, returning home to play host to Bluefield State. Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Eddie King Gym.

The Golden Eagles have won six of their last seven games and own a 7-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in WVIAC play. UC topped the century mark in each of its last two victories, a 105-91 victory over Kentucky Christian on Dec. 17 and a 121-57 rout over Ohio University-Eastern on Dec. 20.

Four players are averaging in double figures in scoring for UC. Senior forward Robert Strickland leads the pack with a 17.9 points per game average and pulls down 7.8 rebounds per game. Senior guard Marquis Brooks has hit 26 3-pointers and has a 17.6 points per contest average. Sophomore guard/forward John White has a 10.9 points and 6.6 rebounds average and senior guard Austin Weatherington is racking up 10.0 points and 3.6 assists per game.
