Hey guys, welcome to my first edition of the Friday Blog, where I recap the week's events and make NFL predictions for the upcoming weekend.
So, I hope that everyone has recovered from Dirtgate. I think that is just the most ridiculous thing in the world, for Kenny Rogers to think no one would see the pine tar on his hand! The best part about this was when I was reading some articles on SI.com, an anonymous pitching coach for a big league team was saying how it was obviously pine tar. He went on to claim that pitchers use “shaving cream, suntan lotion, and pine tar” to doctor up the baseball. Does that strike anyone as odd? Pitching coaches know all about this stuff, and they don’t do anything about it, perhaps they even encourage this? The pitching coach went on to talk about how during the summer, suntan lotion and shaving cream work well since they are undetectable. When it is cold however, which it is at the World Series, pine tar apparently works better. Why doesn’t baseball just admit to all their little leaguers and other fans that they take steroids, fake injuries, and doctor baseballs? Baseball is a wonderful sport, yet its culture promotes cheating to get ahead. Frankly, I don’t care if they cheat. I think the steroid era was/is good for the game. I just wish that they would legalize all the cheating so it wouldn’t be cheating. They should let ball players inject themselves with whatever they can. Get them all jacked up on cocaine and roids, then have pitchers apply lead tape to baseballs to make them curve even more. What's the harm in making the game more interesting to watch? Baseball is at a crossroads and they need to do something drastic to fix its internal flaws.
So, who is going to win the World Series?? Everyone including myself picked the Tigers to take it home in 5 or 6 games. Of course, now I don’t realize why I picked the young, inexperienced Tigers to beat up on arguably the most weathered and experienced team in all of the playoffs. Even with the 13th best record during the regular season (boy that doesn’t sound right now, does it?) these guys were in the WS during ’04 when my beloved Sox swept them with basically the same core of players. Some of these guys are getting older, as Rolen and Edmonds look to be nearing the end of their careers. I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet that these guys are seeing this as one of their final chances to win a ring, and are giving it their all. Then with Pujols, the best player in all of baseball, they have a strong foundation for a WS champion. The key with the Cardinals is that they have role players and stars. Detroit’s only real offensive star in the making is Craig Monroe, and the rest of the players seem to be role players, including Pudge since he’s clearly off the roids now. They have a bunch of role players who are also young and inexperienced. I’m surprised how shaky the young pitching staff has been, but then again they are very young so I guess it shouldn’t have been much of a surprise. I think the Tigers are going to be a force in the coming years, especially if they can sign one more high profile offensive player. For now though, they are a bunch of kittens who need time to grow into a winner. Great team, but its too early for them now. Cardinals are going to win tonight in St Louis to take the series.
Quickly over to golf, Tiger Woods is the only athlete who I look up to as a role model. I think Tiger is wonderful for not just golf, but for the world as well. I just think it’s a true reflection on his character that he didn’t play in the Funai at Disney last week just so he could win the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average. Of course, the PGA tour frowned upon this action for the reasons of TV coverage and ticket sales. There are also some people who believe that Tiger is becoming bigger than the game, playing in the tournaments he wants to, and he doesn’t feel the need to win trophies. The only trophies that he cares about are the Green Jacket, the US Open, the Claret Jug, and the Wanamaker Trophy. It’s all about the majors for Tiger. What is Tiger going to do with another scoring title trophy? He already has 6! There’s no place to put another one in his 10 acre property in Jupiter, FL. Anyway, let Tiger do what he wants Tim Finchem. He owns your future.
Finally, to the NFL!!! What a great weekend it should be, with all the great games on tap. I can’t wait to see Indy/Denver. But let’s take a look at the picks
49ers at Bears- Sunday at 1pm
Like this should be a contest. I think the Bears are going to take it easy on the 49ers, and only win by about 21 points. Thomas Jones will be the focus of this game, and will pile up about 130 yards on the ground. Alex Smith has been good this year, but I think that the Bears will give him a nightmare game with the exception of one big play. Smith will have a 60+ yard TD for his only score, but will also be intercepted once and fumble once as well. Final Score- Bears 31, 49ers 10.
Bucs at Giants- Sunday at 1pm
The Bucs have played very tough over the past few weeks, getting a miracle win last week with Matt Bryant’s 62 yard storybook game-winning field goal. I think that Eli is going to struggle but will end up getting the job done. Bruce Gradkowski will hold the Bucs in the game until the final 3 minutes or so when Eli hooks up with Shockey for the go-ahead TD. Final Score- Giants 17, Bucs 10
Seahawks at Cheifs- Sunday at 1pm
Too bad, this should have been a duel of two great running backs. Funny how things change so much in one year. I loved Larry Johnson when he played at Penn St. I wished he won the Heisman (he did average something like 8 yard per carry that year!), then I was shocked when he wasn’t drafted til the end of the first round. Hopefully he gets back into the groove he had last year and builds upon the great game he had last week. Im guessing a solid 145 and 2 TD’s for LJ, and the Seahawks season has hit a huge pothole with the loss of Shaun Alexander (same spelling of my name and my brothers name in one!) and Matt Hasselbeck. Final Score- Chiefs 28, Hawks 6
Cardinals at Packers- Sunday at 1pm
Watch Leinart have a ridiculous game. The Packers defense is not good, and Anquan Boldin, my favorite receiver, is going to go off for about 140 yards and 2 TDs. Leinart will pass for 250 and lead the Cardinals to his first victory, with help from Brett Favre’s 3 INTs. Final Score—Cardinals 27, Packers 17.
Ravens at Saints- Sunday at 1pm
Reggie Bush will dominate this game… bold prediction. He won’t run much, but he’ll catch 10 passes and score 2 TDs. I have a feeling that he will finally realize his offensive potential against a scary Raven’s D. Ravens won’t be able to do anything on offense, so it will come down to the Saints holding on for a victory. Final Score-- Saints 17, Ravens 13
Texans at Titans- Sunday at 1pm
Vince Young will make the Texans feel stupid with virtuouso play until he is knocked out of the game after running for a first down. Disaster game for the Titans. Final Score-- Texans 27, Titans 14
Colts at Broncos- Sunday at 1pm
The Broncos are supposedly the best defense in the NFL next to the Bears. The Colts cant stop the run. This should be a very interesting matchup, and I really have no clue who’s going to win. I’m going to first assume that this will end up being a shootout. The Colts are going to score points, that’s what they are best at. If Peyton is constantly blitzed, and the weather is brutal (which its supposed to be 65 and sunny, but anything can happen in Denver), then I can see Peyton struggling, but I don’t see it. The Colts are going to score on their first drive. After that, the Broncos will run the Bell brothers all game, while mixing it a few long play action passes to Javon Walker. If Peyton plays as Peyton, and not the Peyton that we have seen in playoff games against the Steelers and Patriots, then expect the Colts to win, which I am doing. Final Score--- Colts 34, Broncos- 31
Falcons at Bengals- Sunday at 1pm
Another good matchup, should be fun to watch. Palmer and Chad Johnson will finally get together for a score or two. Vick will struggle but will still pull out an impressive comeback. Falcons will rush for 250 yards, and Palmer will throw for 325. Final Score—Falcons 27, Bengals 24
Jaguars at Eagles- Sunday at 1pm
Defensive struggle for most of the game. David Garrard is rumored to start for the ailing Byron Leftwich. We have to assume that McNabb is motivated to break out and throw for 4 TD’s, most of them in the 4th quarter. The Jags Defense are always a feast or famine, and Sunday night they are going to be hurting pretty badly. Final Score—Eagles 28, Jaguars 17
Jets at Browns- Sunday at 4:15pm
I don’t care, do you? Final Score- J-E-T-S 26, Browns 15
Rams at Chargers- Sunday at 4:05 pm
Do these great matchups ever end?? Watch this game if it is on in your area. San Diego is one of the best teams in the league, but is their D going to hold up with the distraction of Shawne Merriman? We shall see, but I think this game has shootout written all over it. Steven Jackson is going to run all over the place for a TD and 125 yards. Torry Holt is going to have another good game and score at least 1 TD. As for LT and company, watch the Chargers offense have 5 TD’s combined between LT and Gates. Last team to score wins this game. Final Score—Chargers 41, Rams 38.
Steelers at Raiders- Sunday at 4:15pm
I really hope the Steelers realize there is no point to playing Big Ben. They are playing the worst team this decade in the Raiders. Batch has the highest QB rating in the NFL if he had enough attempts to qualify for it. Raiders suck, but this game will be closer than what it seems like it should be. Final Score- Steelers 14, Raiders 9
Cowboys at Panthers- Sunday at 8:15 pm
Finally the Panthers Defense will show how good I thought they were going to be this year. Tony Romo is going to be in for a rude wake up call, in his first start. The Panthers are going to win this game with their Defense only. The Defense will score at least 1 TD, will sack Romo at least 4 times, and will recover at least 1 fumble. Dallas will have major problems on offense and TO will go off again. Not a good week for Big D. Final Score- Panthers 38, Cowboys 13
Patriots at Vikings MONDAY NIGHT
An underrated game for everyone who isn’t a Pats fan. If the Pats can win, this will be a huge victory for them. If the Vikings can win, that will put them into the running for a Wild Card spot out of the NFC north. I really don’t think the Vikings are as good as the trendy experts think. The Pats are going to squeak out yet another victory in the 4th quarter thanks to an epic, 76 yard drive by Brady and company. Final Score—Patriots 17, Vikings 13
Finally, some adult content for you all. I want to share this video with all my loyal readers from YouTube, Barney the purple dinosaur lip synching to Tupac’s Hit em Up. Hilarious http://youtube.com/watch?v=RVAVeXwb2O0
