Pitt and WVU Win

Benjamin led Pitt with 20 points

Last night Pitt pulled away from Lafayette in the second half to finish their non-conference season 12-1. Lafayette looked like a cupcake going in, but led Pitt for most of the first half, despite being outplayed. The Leopards simply were unconcious from three point range, sinking 9 of their first 13 attempts. In particular, Matt Betley hit all 6 of his long-range attempts, scoring 20 points total. Luckily for Pitt, Lafayette cooled down in the second half and the Panthers did a nice job on offense the whole game. Ronald Ramon looked uncomfortable at the point but hit double-figures in points and assists while not turning the ball over. He finally seems to have recovered his famous 3-point shot. Also playing well last night were Keith Benjamin, Gilbert Brown, and Tyrell Biggs, who all hit double figures. Biggs and Benjamin had career highs with 19 and 20 points. They will need to continue to play well for Pitt to win Big East games. The conference opener is on Sunday at #16 Villanova. ---------------------------- West Virginia, surprisingly, dominated the Fiesta Bowl last night. After a 20-point victory over Oklahoma, WVU looked to be fully recovered, as they hired Bill Stewart, who led the Mountaineers to a shocking win. For some reason, Pitt fans, (myself included) were happy to see WVU triumphant. Was it because of the Big East? Was it because Pitt beat them? Who knows, but WVU just chalked up another BCS win for the conference, which hasn't lost a BCS game since the Pitt-Utah debacle.
