No Clement; Thoughts on the Rotation
Contrary to some rumors floating around earlier in the week, the Bucs missed out on Matt Clement. He signed with the Cardinals yesterday, backing up GM Neal Huntington's statement the day before, in which he implied he was O.K. with having Gorzelanny, Snell, Maholm, Morris, and Duke make up the '08 rotation. I'm not sure what to think about that...getting Clement would have been nice, and while all five of those guys have shown promise at some time or another, it's risky to hope they will all click at once. Duke particularly. Not going after a pitcher in the offseason tells me that Huntington is really hoping that Duke pitched poorly last year due to injury, not because he is simply a bad pitcher. Still, even if that works out, it's not exactly as if the rest of the staff is super-reliable. I guess Morris can be counted on to be somewhat consistent, but the other three, despite having shown signs of brilliance, are young and very inconsistent.
Basically, by NOT acquiring a pitcher (so far) in the offseason, Huntington is taking a risk. Then again, as GM of the Pirates, taking risks is something that has to be done.
One other piece of actual news (of very little importance): all pitchers will report to mini-camp except for Marte and Morris.
