I was asked to write the conference men's basketball preview for Bobcat Fans Magazine out in a couple of weeks so I decided to pass on a few thoughts in this blog that are brought up in the magazine story.  To get the full story pick up the magazine in and around San Marcos.

This year the Southland Conference is loaded with good teams.  I can't remember a time when there were four teams with double digit wins going into conference play, and two of those schools with only one loss.  There have been several signature out of conference wins by those schools, Sam Houston beat Texas Tech and Stephen F. Austin beat Oklahoma to name two.  Texas State had some chances to have that kind of win too but couldn't pull any out, although the Bobcats played Rice, SMU and Texas close.

I talked to Coach Doug Davalos Saturday after the loss to UT Pan American and he told me that this team lacks consistency.  I really didn't think about that before he mentioned it (gee I guess that's why he is the coach and I am writing an internet blog), but the out of conference record and stats certainly supports that.  The team was blown out by A&M and the next week played Texas closer than any team had up to that point.  The game Saturday was certainly a down time with the team looking out of sync most of the night.

With all of that said Texas State will have to step it up to make the conference tournament this year.  The ‘Cats haven't done that in some time.  The best teams are in the Southland West with Sam Houston, SFA and UT Arlington leading the way, Texas State had the 4th best record in the West followed closely by UTSA. Consistent play may not come this season because of the age of this team.  If Coach Davalos can keep this freshman class intact and keep adding talent over the next two years that consistency will come and the Bobcats will be a very dangerous team.
