News and Notes--Jan. 7
The Pirates signed veteran journeyman pitcher Elmer Dessens over the weekend. He's 36 and had an ERA over 6 last season, and as Evan pointed out, his name is Elmer, which is not exactly an intimidating name for a pitcher. Anyway, it's likely he will make the team out of spring training as a relief man. I guess it's nice to have a veteran inning-eater in the 'pen, but right now he looks like last year's Tony Armas to me. At least we aren't penciling him in to the rotation just yet.
The Pirates are also reported to be working on a long term deal with closer Matt Capps rather than infielder Freddy Sanchez.

The BCS National Championship is on tonight between Ohio State and LSU from New Orleans. OSU is one of the last one-loss teams standing and both of LSU's losses came in triple overtime.

Pitt dropped in the rankings to numbers 18 and 20 after Sunday's loss at Villanova. That's to be expected. This week Pitt travels to USF on Wednesday and plays Seton Hall at home on Saturday. Villanova dropped, too, since they lost to DePaul before edging Pitt.
