Well we all now know who won the game, but who really won the evening?
A disclaimer: I’m a Purdue student, and I won’t lie, I was rooting for Ohio State, not so much for the benefit of the Big Ten, but I figure it looks better for us if Purdue’s loss to OSU came to the National Champion.
Pregame guests/gags
Gotta go with Shaq. Jack Nicholas is nice and all, but how can you really top Shaq dressed up like Abraham Lincoln? The answer: you can’t. Point goes to LSU
Band Pregame
Ohio State truly is the “best d@mn band in the land”, but in my book it is only because they actually trademarked the statement. (If I had to pick, I’d have to go with Michigan State) That said, the Tiger band lines weren’t all straight, and I actually saw a missed step off. That just doesn’t cut it in my book, and Ohio State had none of that. Point goes to OSU
School Commercial
LSU with the overly cheesy “teamwork is awesome, and we have lots of it” commercial, OSU answers with “it’s all about the students, and how they change the world, yet remain students at heart”. This may be to close to call. I’m going to have to give this one to LSU. The whole O-H-I-O thing really just seems like a cheep knockoff from the YMCA to me.
Conference Commercial
SEC went with tradition, big ten with rappers/poets in black and white. Both are interesting tactics that have been done before, however the big ten commercial was all about basketball? This is a football game, basketball has to wait one more day. SEC/ LSU gets the point.
Pontiac Game Changing Performance:
Well… the moments involving the SEC and the Big Ten both lost, so I guess we need to call this one a draw. No points for anyone!
1st half
LSU 24 OSU 10
LSU point
So much deja-vu, it almost hurt my head
Band halftime
OSU appears to have learned from last year’s debacle, having abandoned the tactic of offending people by sinking the Titanic, and going with the perpetually overdone, yet always safe patriotic bit. You gotta love the attempt to chair step backwards.
LSU with… more patriotic. Wow, that sure is original. Although, I will admit, I do like the New Orleans swing variation. However, one big important question remains unanswered. Why aren’t the cymbals dancing? The LSU strippers dancers certainly are, why isn’t anyone else? (Ok, I admit, that was a little mean. But I can't lie, that is the first thought that popped into my head)
Tough call here… again I have to give a slight nod to Ohio State due to the lack of Cymbal visuals on LSU part, as well as rather poor line marching off the field to the fight song.
Alumni Kicking Competition
OSU with the 43 yarder to start, however it was quickly answered by the LSU kicker. With everything on the line, the OSU kicker calmly puts it through from 45. LSU from 46 is… no good.
OSU gets a point
2nd half
14-14
No points awarded
Final score
38-24
LSU point
Student representation/support:
Now this one isn’t much of a fair fight- Beyond the obvious “game played in Louisiana” thing, LSU doesn’t start school until January 14, while OSU started on the 3rd. So while LSU will get the point, that should be taken with a grain of salt.
Special props to Jamarcus Russell for pointing out that the only real difference between the players in the SEC and the Big Ten are the colors of their uniforms. Way to take the high road, especially after the Big Ten commish called SEC players dumb thugs. I forgot, which team committed multiple personal fouls that allowed the other to score? Hmm… bonus point to LSU for that one.
Now then, lets tally up the scores:
LSU: 7
Ohio State: 3
Ohio State Band: 2
LSU Band: 0
Everything else Ohio State: 1
Everything else LSU: 7
So if it wasn’t for the bands, it would have been even more of a blowout. Oh well, at least it gives the OSU fans something to cheer about
Now its time for me to sleep, for unlike all those LSU students undoubtedly getting plastered tonight, I have class to attend in the morning.
