How come Big 10 and Pac 10 officials and fans don't want a playoff? Not even a plus-one? I'll give you the slippery slope argument with the plus-one, i.e. having a plus-one system will go down the slippery slope into an 8 and [gasp] 16 team playoff :-o. That's actually the main reason why I'm in favor of a plus-one system.
Please Big 10 and Pac 10 fans, I want you to give me some compelling arguments as to why a playoff would be bad.
Do you think you'll lose the sanctity of the Rose Bowl?
Is it because Ohio st. and USC make it into the BCS title game on a regular basis with the BCS, and you don't want to lose that? Will fans of an entire conference back those two teams because of their success?
If not, tell me why. I'd really like to know. Even if you're not a fan of those conferences or a playoff, I'd still like to hear your reasons.
If no one tells me why they don't want a playoff, then I'll just assume that there are no real arguments for standing against a playoff.
What do you think LSU fans coming off of your fresh victory?
I've favored a playoff before my dawgs didn't make it into the BCS championship game. I didn't realistically expect UGA to go once WVU and Mizzou lost, but there was an outside hope b/c UGA was ranked #4 behind Ohio State at the time. You'd know the excitement that could come from that if your team has ever been #3 and #'s 1/2 has lost. If you don't believe that I've been objectively pro-playoff, then look at some of my comments and blogs of yester-season.
Please, please, please give me good reasons for why the BCS is better than a playoff.

I would like to see a plus-one. The only times an eight team playoff would work would be in a season like this one, when there was not one team that stood above the rest. A sixteen team playoff would just be flat out stupid, because we will never have a season where sixteen teams deserve a shot at the national title. By the way, I am a Penn State fan, and I hate Ohio State.

Well, it seems as if most of these fans are in favor of a playoff or plus-one, but where are the naysayers?

32 teams - 3 weeks of games
a week off and then
the real Championship game
And I'd like it so 2 PAC10 / or Big 10 / or SEC etc etc
could end up in the Game,
I don't care if we have to do it without the BIG-PAC Crying association.
They'll come back or not,
The Rose? - hasn't been a good game in years.
They ought to pull their heads out and get lined up for a playoff game,
Hey Big Ten - you could get one too!

I think the Rose Bowl really is a big conern for those two conferences.
"We just have never seen a plus-one plan that addresses the Rose Bowl and its relationship to the Big Ten and Pac-10 in a way that would be acceptable to us," Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney said on XM radio last week. "So we've been having a relationship with the BCS for a decade and we have a 60-year relationship with the Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl relationship, to be honest with you, is the most important one we have. ??? " -Jime Delaney (Big 10 commissioner)

You need the bowls (playoff or no playoff) since you only play 14 maximum games a year in a complex sport like football. There needs to be a determining factor to rank the top teams (like how the bowls determine preseason today) or you have no idea which team or conference is good. If we ditched the bowls, then we would only have a few OOC games to decide on who deserved those top 8 or 16 hypotheticalplayoff spots. OR, you could turn college football into college basketball and have a 64-team playoff hell. There's just no perfect way, but the BCS is the way to go.

Yeah, some other guy in another blog brought up the crappy OOC games argument that would result from a playoff. Not having any Texas/OSU or Tennessee/Cal games would suck heartily.
As long as each conference champion went into the playoff, then you wouldn't need to determine how strong each conference is. Just follow your gut when making decisions about any at-large teams (cause that'd work better than the BCS).

A plus 1 would be the best scenario for me. In most years outside of this year, anyone in the top 4 could make a very good argument to be in the NC. As opposed to this year where you could only make an argument why all the teams shouldn't be in the national championship. A plus 1 would still keep the regular season exciting, which an 8 team or 16 team playoff would not.

This is true. A plus one would keep the regular season's integrity. I still think an 8 team playoff would keep the regular season exciting, but a plus one would do that even more so.
