In twenty-seven September games, the Red Sox starters combined for a 4-13 record and averaged 4.2 innings/start with a 7.30 ERA.

Out of those twenty-seven starts, only five qualify as "quality starts."

It's entertaining to note that the seven Red Sox pitchers that started games in September made more money this year that the entire Tampa Bay Rays team that knocked them out of the playoffs.

Let's take a look at their individual contributions:

Josh Beckette ~ $17m ~ 4 starts ~ 5.75 Inn/GS ~ 5.48 ERA ~ 1-2 record ~

John Lackey ~ $15.95m ~ 5 starts ~ 4.73 Inn/GS ~ 9.13 ERA ~ 0-2 record ~

Jon Lester ~ $5.75m ~ 6 starts ~ 5.28 Inn/GS ~ 5.40 ERA ~ 1-3 record ~

Tim Wakefield ~ $1.5m ~ 4 starts ~ 5.00 Inn/GS ~ 6.30 ERA ~ 1-2 record ~

Andrew Miller ~ $1.3m ~ 2 starts ~ 3.17 Inn/GS ~ 15.63 ERA ~ 0-2 record ~

Eric Bedard ~ $1m ~ 3 starts ~ 4.00 Inn/GS ~ 5.25 ERA ~ 1-0 record ~

Kyle Weiland ~ $? ~ 3 starts ~ 3.89 Inn/GS ~ 9.26 ERA ~ 0-2 record ~

I had so much fun compiling this information that I might continue to add bits about the Red Sox' historical collapse as time and my inclination permit.

A capital idea. Carry on.

Good post Slinky. It's almost unbelieveable how bad the numbers are. You'd almost think a team could bring up their AAA staff and have a better ERA than 7.30
