As we have again learned with shocking clarity, the MLB Hall of Fame voting is a complete JOKE!
Goose Gossage was elected on his 9th try. Wow, he must have put up some great numbers between 2000 and 2008. Why does it take nine years? Even if you excuse the stupidity of the "not first-ballot worthy" argument, why not years 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8? Oh, and don't forget the "it's a weak class" argument. So he's good enough to BE in the Hall of Fame with last Carlton Fisk, Tony Perez, Dave Winfield, Kirby Puckett, Ozzie Smith, Eddie Murray, Gary Carter, Paul Molitor, Dennis Eckersley, Wade Boggs, Ryne Sandberg, Bruce Sutter, Tony Gwynn, and Cal Ripken (all of whom have been inducted since Gossage's first ballot) but he's not good enough to GO in the Hall with them. That's completey moronic.
Tim Raines got 24% of the vote. Apparently all 543 "journalists" voting didn't know that baseball was being played in Montreal in the 80s. I can just hear the hamster-wheel thought processes: "Yeah, Raines is the #2 leadoff hitter of ALL F**KING TIME, but he's not #1, so I vote no. Maybe in year 13, though, if it's a weak ballot."
I wonder if we'll ever reach the point where players get into the Hall of Fame based upon their skills, not their teammates (Tony Perez? seriously?), the size of the market they played in, or how nice they were to reporters.
