News and Notes--Jan. 11

The Penguins are just absolutely on fire now. Last night's 4-1 win over the Lightning gave the Pens their 8th win in a row, and goalie Ty Conklin has been simply unreal, getting his 9th straight win. The Penguins haven't even lost a game all year! They've also climbed within 1 point of the division-leading Devils. The Pens play at Atlanta tomorrow night.

The Pirates have announced plans for a new academy in the Dominican Republic. The cost will fall within $4-5 million, which is just about the norm for similar facilities. Seeing the plethora of talent being produced by the Dominican, this can't be a bad thing.
----------------------
Mondesi's House announced its enormous new team of writers today. As far as Pittsburgh sports blogs go, this one is by far the most entertaining. Mondesi is creative, knowledgeable, and extremely humorous. The only serious weakness was lack of post frequency. With 12 new writers, that ought to change. Good luck, Mondesi, and if anyone reading this hasn't been over there yet, give it a look.

Pitt AD Steve Pederson sent an email to all season ticket (Fball) holders basically reaching out for advice on how to make game-day experiences better at Heinz Field. Pitt Blather already has a ton of suggestions, and you can read more about it (and contribute, too) over there, since there are simply too many good suggestions for me to repeat.

Pitt Basketball battles Seton Hall tomorrow at 2 at the Pete. Game is on local TV. Seton Hall is 0-2 in the Big East and doesn't really have a marquee win (they've beaten Virginia and Robert Morris). As Jesse noted a few weeks ago, they also lost to Penn State. Pitt should get a win, but nothing is easy in the Big East without two starters and the team had better not look ahead to #8 Georgetown (on Monday).
