Alex Rodriguez, one of the best players in baseball, will make over $22 million this season, not including endorsements and commercials.
George W. Bush will make roughly $200,000 this year.
What kind of society would have an entertainer making over 100 times the yearly income of the President of the United States? Oh yeah, that would be us.
We pay athletes an obscene amount of money to play a game. Maybe an amazing game, but a game. Why do we pay these people so much?
Athletes argue that they can only work for a short period of time. I highly doubt that A-Rod will ever be in any kinda of financial trouble, even if he lives to be 200 years old.
Why isn't this talked about more? This is sickening to me.
My mom is a great teacher at a middle school. A-Rod will make three times as much as she will....in one game. A-Rod will probably retire in his late 30's. My mother won't be able to retire before she turns 70.
This should concern everyone. When we value athletics more than education, we're in deep trouble as a country. In 20 years, we will no longer be the world power. China and India will rule the world. They recognize that educating the young citizens is the key to a bright future. We don't. By the time we do, it will be too late.
In this country, our schools are grossly underfunded and our teachers are shockingly unappreciated, or at least they are compared to sports. Sports are important, but maybe our athletes could take a pay cut for the greater good of everyone and donate that money to something more useful than simple entertainment.
