No one was more wrong than I was in picking Sunday's games, predicting that the Colts and Cowboys would blow out their opponents, the Chargers and the Giants. Let us begin with my Chargers-Colts analysis:
I was right on only a few things. I said that the Chargers would need Peyton Manning to not seek revenge, Bob Sanders being a non-factor, and a big game, and I predicted that Michael Turner would be more important than LT. That's about it. I also said that the only way that the Chargers would be able to move would be on corner and crossing routes to Chambers and Jackson. That's what happened. Yay for me. Now for the good stuff;
I thought that the kickers would play a big role. The Colts special teams units were better than expected, but it didn't help much. I thought that there was a -5% chance of a Charger victory due to Norv Turner. I was so, so, so very wrong about this. Norv Turner outcoached Tony Dungy, using the same scheme on Peyton Manning that the Jaguars used. Switching from the 3-4 to hybrid looks and sometimes mixing in the 46 was really smart, and because the Colts don't have a guy like Randy Moss, they were able to abstain from triple teams and focus on making good tackles in the short passing game. The Colts also made the mistake of abandoning the run and passing 48 times. New England beat the same type of defense with 28 dink and dunk passes and about 30 runs. 48 passes is probably too many. No balance creates predictibility and allowed the Bolts to key on the passing attack. Manning threw two picks, one of which wasn't his fault, just a great defensive play, and the other one was completely his fault. I hated him when he threw into the heart of the bubble zone. Aaarrgghh! Peyton let me down the one time I ever counted on him, and like a woman scorned, I will never count on him again, or worse... Also, Billy Volek? I wish I had seen that coming right? Oh well, now the game will get lower ratings next week and Tony Dungy is more likely to retire. (Go for it Tony. You're a class act but spend some time with your family. Ask Cowher how it's working for him.)
The Dallas New York game is the one that I royally screwed up on, and I am actually considering Eli Manning among the teir two guys now, after that 3rd good performance. I now officially hate the Manning brothers, (see above) but I think Eli is making good progress. As for my predicitions, I said that the only shot for the Giants to win was to run for 175-200 yards. They ran for 90. The players that really killed me were Dallas' wide receivers. I thought that they could run rampant, and they were open at times, but Patrick Crayton choked, Terrell Owens ran some really half-**** routes, and their QB let them, and me, down. Romo felt an incredible amount of pressure from a line that I ignored and probably internally as well. Tony Romo is now the newest Peyton Manning-esque QB. He is great in the regular season but forget about the playoffs. Manning was good against New England last year, but, like this year, referrees were heavily involved in the game. (Have you ever seen a more absurd call than the INT holding call at the end of that first half?) As for Romo, he just jumps around too much, overthrowing the ball and seeming completely desperate to make the big play. Well, sorry Giants, I won't count you out again.

Its ok, some people thought I would be eating crow after Saturday. That BBQ Seahawk was mighty fine.

PackBrew, shut up already. It turns out that crow's pretty good, tastes just like Raven.

It may taste just like raven, but I wonder PackBrew, will you be able to stomach it if the dish in front of you was in fact a cheese head fondue served up by a giant?

I must admit I didn't expect you to be eating crow after all the smack you talked about the Giants' chances in that game. I'll give you some respect for that. I guess those "great" corners for the Cowpokes weren't much of a factor in the game as Eli had his third straight outing with a 100+ passer rating. He wasn't lights out, but he took what was there and outplayed a jittery Romo. Next up...the Pack, who I have much respect for. This will be the toughest test of the season and I am much more nervous about this game than I was the Cowboys simply because it's going to be played on the frozen tundra. Eli doesn't typically play well in the cold, but hey, until now he hasn't played well in the playoffs. Good luck to the Pack and may the best team head to Arizona!
