Georgia President Wants a Playoff
President Michael Adams of Georgia has gone on record in the past week saying that there must be a playoff in Division I-FBS football. I am going to take full credit for this thinking. Obviously, he has been reading the Bracket Brawls articles and said, "Wow, that is a tremendous idea - we should do that." You're welcome. According to this story, Adams believes that bowl committees and a certain television station (wink, wink) are getting too much power over the way college football is played. To me, this guy is just blowing smoke up our... well, you know. Last season, Florida's President said the same thing until he found out that the Gators would be playing for the National Championship... then he changed his tone. Adams feels that Georgia got slighted, but they did not - they did not even win their division, let alone their conference, so how can they play for a national title? Now, I am all for a college playoff, but if the powers that be really want one, want it all the time, not just when your school missed out.
Also, if you do not want playoffs, then be honest with the reason. Academics has nothing to do with it. Where is the academic outrage when college basketball teams spend a week in Hawai'i or Alaska or wherever else they play preseason tournaments, or when teams are on road trips for games, or the week and a half when they are away from school when they play their conference tournaments, or the ENTIRE MONTH that some schools potentially are out of school because of the March Madness tournament? All of these trips take place around finals time in the fall and midterms time in the spring semester by the way. Do not insult our intelligence, we all know that money talks, and the money that goes with the bowl format is the reason that they do not want a playoff system that would take place while students are on winter break. If it is alright for Division I-AA, II and III schools, where academics is supposed to be more important because those guys have such a small shot at the NFL, then why isn't it ok for I-A, where we know academics do not mean as much?
Scale back to 11 games and get a 16-team tournament like D I-AA, or even go to 10 games and play a 32-team tournament like D-III. But, that would cost gate receipts at the home stadiums, you say? No, it will not. Let the higher seeded teams host the games, like the lower divisions do. All I hear is excuses. I do not want any more excuses, just results. If you want a playoff system, want it all the time - if you do not want it, do not lie to me about your reasons for not wanting it, but DO NOT insult the intelligence of me and every other college football fan in America.
Mallett to Transfer
After Michigan's bowl win over Florida, Pops Mesday looked at me and asked, "So, what's going to happen with that freshman QB Michigan has?" At first, I was speechless because Pops does not follow college football all too closely - he watches it, but does not really know the major storylines. After about a minute, I said, "What do you mean?" He said, "Well, that new coach likes to run that spread and the option and all... that kid can't really run." Again, I was floored and I answered, "He's going to transfer." Thank you, Ryan Mallett, for making me a prophet. As reported by multiple new outlets as early as last week...
