Just some passing thoughts from this weekend...
First of all, if you haven't already, go see Casino Royale. It is one of the best movies i've seen in years, therefore it is by far and away the best Bond movie of all time. Imagine an academy award-winning movie that just happens to have James Bond as one of the characters. I saw Bond on opening weekend, sitting in the 2nd row, with my buddies. I was sad to see it end 2 1/2 hours later, despite the crick in my neck. This weekend, I took my family out to see it, and we were able to get much better seats. Now I've been known to see several movies well over ten times (Happy Gilmore being #1, with at least 40 viewings in my life--- I can recite the entire movie if I tried I bet), so this is business as usual for me to see a movie more than once. However, I must say it was a first for me to feel compelled to catch it a second time while it was in theaters. I felt like a little 12 year old girl who went to see Titanic over and over again when it came out in 1996. Anyway, absolute first-class film. The script itself is academy-worthy, the action is surprising, and the acting is phenomenal. You can actually believe in James Bond, Daniel Craig makes him seem human. Anyway, go see it, you will love it (even if you are a girl!).
There that was bothering me yesterday that I hadn't mentioned Bond to my readers while I was on the golf course. Yes, it was 60 degrees near home so I got myself over to the course to play one last round for the year. Unfortunately, I had the worst slice I've ever experienced in my life, and only hit 2 fairways. I'm proudly a 5 handicapper during the golf season when I routinely play 4-5 times a week. This was the first time I had hit a golf ball in 2 months however, so I didn't expect live up to the USGA's impression of me. Unfortunately, I ended up shooting a freakin 90 on my home course. So that was quite comical for myself, but it was still golf so I enjoyed it nonetheless.
As for football, I'd like to point out a few topics from my belated Friday blog. I hit a little snag in the predictions this week as I had a few games slip away in the final seconds inexplicably. Vince Young is still my unicorn, but I guess I can thank Eli Manning for that one (I'm sure Arthur really enjoyed that one). The Panthers are still a Rubik’s cube, and I'm finally giving up on the Steelers. Lets look at some other things...
The 49ers should have won that game, that would have been a helluva pick had I gotten that one right. I almost picked Frank Gore's rushing total to a T. Perhaps he is, in fact, one of the top 5 best running backs. What are everyone else's rankings for that? Here’s mine:
1. Laidain... Ladian... LT
2. Larry Johnson
3. Tiki Barber
4. Frank Gore
5. Brian Westbrook
I'd like to see what everyone else thinks. After LT and LJ, it really seems to be a toss up from week to week.
Bengals finally look like a playoff team that they should have been. Keep up the good work convicts and you'll be awfully fun to watch in the playoffs. I hope we see a Bengals/Chargers matchup in the postseason. They have an extremely difficult schedule coming up, but if Carson gets protection, they can finish 10-6 and make it.
I'm still confused how anyone can throw for 405 yards and only have 1 TD. Can someone get on Elias and see what the most yards passing with one touchdown in a game is? 405 yards has got to be pretty close to a record. Hollywood Matt needs a running back, too bad Edge just isn't sharp anymore (3.1 ypc). Chester Taylor seems to be working out fine... I predicted 130 and a touch, I was pretty darned close!
Boy those Jags, you really just don't know what you are going to get from them. They are the AFC's version of the Panthers, seemingly dominant one night and downright disappointing the next. Someone has to get these guys straightened out if they are going to hold onto a playoff spot. Will the Bills run the table and steal that 6th spot from the Jags? Doubtful, but remarkably still possible.
I don't wanna talk about the Panthers anymore. They are great. They suck. What is it? Jason Campbell saved his magic for an extra week and got his first win in his second start. Not bad kid, you don't have a good team but you still beat a supposed NFC leader. Very impressive all around Skins, bravo.
Michael Vick is the worst QB in the history of the NFL. I distinctly remember writing that in a past blog. Hmm, how things come full circle sometimes. He had more rushing attempts than completed passes. Yes, there was a major lack of hands by the Falcons receivers. I saw the pass they dropped towards the end of the game at the 5 yard line. The simple fact is that the Falcons are not a good team, and part of that has to fall on Michael Vick's shoulders. When the "leader" of the team flips off the crowd, how is that supposed to show leadership. I guess he was claiming that "I'm #1" or something. Anyway, I think he's a cancer to the team. Look at Phillip Rivers and compare him to Vick. You listen to Rivers talk and you just like him, his energy positively affects you. When you look at Vick, you think, oh this kid's a thug with "god given talents". He seems to belong in the NBA somewhere, or in Randy Moss's realm. I don't see much passion or respect for the game. He's NFL talent level sure, but he's not a quarterback. Make him return punts or something, or platoon him and the better QB on the team, Matt Schaub. That would be very interesting, and it would probably be very effective too. Jim Mora, listen to me, i'm a genius/miracle worker.
Steelers flopped hardcore. SI.com did an article highlighting Adailus Thomas' skills and he proved them correct with his performance on Sunday. Pittsburg has apparently packed it in or something, becoming too complacent with their Super Bowl rings from a year ago. Oh well, I think that they might still be a decent spoiler during December, but only time will tell. I’m going to assume they will come out with a vengeance next year, so keep that in mind.
Those Jets are pretty good. In fact, they might be the 3rd best team in the NFC if they were moved down there. These guys play so hard every week thanks to Mangenius. There’s still an outside chance they can sneak into the playoffs, but don’t be too surprised if it actually happens. The team still doesn’t excite me, but I believe in them. I just hope they aren’t on TV in my viewing area anymore.
I was surprised at how the Chargers appeared to struggle against the Raiders. LT had more fantasy points passing the ball than the QB Phillip Rivers. He also scored 2 more touchdowns, plus threw a TD pass. He is simply unbelievable. MVP for LT, please, give him that as a remedy for not selecting him to the Pro Bowl during the season where he ran for a career high 1,645 yards, caught 100 passes, and scored 17 TDs. I picked LT to provide 24 points for the Chargers this week (4tds). According to my predictions, that was enough to outscore the Raiders single-handedly. Although he didn’t score 4 touchdowns, he still beat the Raiders in total points scored anyway, so I’d say I got that one pretty close to correct.
The Pats game was one of the ugliest games seen in recent history. When I say that, I’m not counting the Arizona-Bears game earlier this season because I didn’t actually see it. Notice the trend that the Bears are involved in both games I just mentioned? That does not bode well for the Bears in the playoffs. If by some chance they reach the Super Bowl by not blowing it throughout January, I don’t see any way they can win it led by Rex Grossman. He can be more clueless than Yogi Berra sometimes. Anyway, I’ll let Josh do all the Gross-man explaining in the comments page. I’m done talking about him for now.
21 point lead and the Giants crumbled against freakin Vince Young. This guy is unreal. The Titans are the only team that I’m 0-fer with. Every time I pick him he plays badly, and whenever I go against him he spites me. Give him credit, he’s 4-4 with the Titans since he took over the starting job. That’s awesome that he can accomplish that on such a mediocre team. VY could be a damn good player for years to come in the NFL.
Colts destroyed the Eagles like I predicted, but who knew Joe Addai could find the endzone 4 times?? I know my fantasy team enjoyed that one! Manning might just settle down for the remainder of the year and coast. In fact, they should til week 17 and start the playoffs then against Miami.
Speaking of, what happened to Ronnie Brown, is he okay?
Tony Romo was a good waiver wire pickup to substitute Tom Brady this week
And I’m spent. I’ll give you a rundown of my prediction record on Friday. For now, be safe and have a great week!
