George Steinbrenner has moved to desperation. By signing Roger Clemens to a ridiculously high salary, he has shown a crack in his armor and it will come back to haunt him. Clemens isn't the pitcher he was. He simply wants some easy money and publicity. The Red Sox got lucky when he signed with the Yankees. It would have been a ferrytale finsh for "The Rocket" as well as the Sox, if he were to help them into the post-season. Clemens could then retire (for the umteenth time) in a Red Sox uniform.

Let me see if my math is correct. He gets over 4 million a month to pitch the rest of this season. He pitches every 5th game. Isn't that like a $ million bucks a start.

Even for a former great like Clemens, this is a bit extravagant. And who took the bait? Non-other than the Evil genius, Big George himself.

This move will cost the Yankee's & when they don't make the playoffs this season, who gets the blame for losing? Non-other than the fall guy, Joe Torre.

It wouldn't have worked out for him in Boston. The Red Sox simply thought so little of this guy that their pitiful $18 million offer could not have been thought of as remotely satisfying. After all, could you survive on bread alone?

The image of Roger Clemens panhandling down Copley Square begging for a few spare pennies is not what fairytales are made of, no matter what. :(

Your math is correct. But the rest of this ...

Calling Clemens a "former great" would only be accurate if he's stopped being great. Guess what? That hasn't happened yet.

As for Steinbrenner: You're soon to be 77 years old, and if the reports are true, apparently in declining health. In the media capital of the world, your teams have now not won a championship in six years. A free-agent pitcher is available who has a career 66% win percentage and, over the last 3 years, has posted ERA's of:

2004: 2.98
2005: 1.87
2006: 2.30

And you're telling me ... you wouldn't sign him?
