After meeting with the Ravens and the Falcons for their respective head coaching jobs, Jason Garrett has decided to stay as offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.  As a Cowboys fan, I'm happy that he has decided to stay, although I do think he needs some work before becoming a head coach.  But it also got me to thinking about different things in regards to this matter.

 For one, there's a rumor that Jerry Jones has agreed to pay him somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 a year.  This is like the ARod signing, in that it'll be great for coordinators around the league.  Other coordinators will be wanting "Jason Garrett" type money to stay with their respective teams. 

What does this say for Wade Phillips?  I may be wrong, but I think Garrett is making more money that Wade is now.  What happens with a playoff loss next year?  How long is Wade going to be around?  This is a statement that Garrett is the long term answer for Head Coach.

Or is he?  What happens if Romo or Barber is lost for the season and the Cowboys go 8-8?  Garrett will no longer be the "next great head coach" in waiting.  To make matters more complicated, what happens if Bill Cowher decides to coach again and JJ decides to go with him instead of Garrett.  Will Garrett still be offered any head coaching jobs like he was this year?  Was it a good business decision to stay in Dallas?  It may have been better to "strike while the iron is hot" for Garrett.
