There is no excuse for not reporting the alleged crime to the police, none, specially this kind of child abuse.
Reports are saying that Penn state is in the process of -managing his exit- I bet there are lots of folks out there having a hard time with that.
If Joe Paterno knew about it and was simply protecting his program rather than protecting this child's welfare, there should be no discussion about letting him resign in an- image damage control- scenario.
He should be fired. Period.
It matters not if the alleged crime happened, what matters is the fact that if Mr. Paterno was allegedly told about it and did not report it to the police.
If all this allegations turn out to be true, the only exit strategy the University should be planing is how to give him the fastest route out of campus after he gets fired. Nobody including Penn State should give a damm about Paternos legacy.
Enough said.
UPDATE: I found nothing more disgusting than listening Penn State young students outside of Paterno's home cheering him on...wonder how many of them have kids..

We should be talking about Paterno's farewell speech. He should be gone already.

While I agree this is a horrible crime and the perpetrator should be in jail, or worse, I think maybe we should reserve some judgement toward Joe Paterno.
From what I have read and heard he followed standard operating procedure by telling his superiors at the university. What is not clear at this point is if Penn State investigated the claims, and if they did what the resulting investigation found.
If there was an investigation that Paterno followed up on and was told "It is handled" then that was probably enough for him. Would he really need to circumvent his superiors if they did an investigation in good faith from Paterno's point of view and "handled" the situation? If someone were accused of stealing office supplies at your work and you see them there the next week after an investigation wouldn't you assume they were cleared of the stealing accusation?
A lot of this comes down to any investigation and possible coverup done by upper management at Penn State. For all we know there are 8 reports being shredded and burned as we speak. People seem to be jumping to the conclusion that Paterno is covering up to save his job/football program, but I have a feeling it is the higher ups doing the covering, and may be trying to offer Paterno up as a sacrifice.
Now if we find out Paterno is an active part of the coverup, then yes he should be fired, and potentially prosecuted.

not defending paterno at all, but apparently there is a chain of command on who he was to report this type of violation to and he did that. not that this excuses him of doing more or following up on how this was handled since he was so close to the person being accused. and since this potentially involved kids..... just horrible. don't think there is enough info to determine how he should be handled, but it looks like he's on the way out. agree that it looks like a cover up at a higher level than paterno.

This is a crime is a moral issue. Not like he handed somone in for drugs and went on coaching.
If nothing happend he should have called the local police.
If nothing happens from there you call another form of law enforcement.
You do not keep hanging out with the perp.

And what if Penn State did "do something"?
The question becomes did Penn State investigate and cover it up? If there was no investigation yes he should have gone to the police. If they did investigate and cover it up only to tell him everything is fine then he has no reason to go to the police.

Raistwalker: Penn State did not even go out and find the victim....
At least he is retiring at the end of the year. All this BS about praying for the victims. Joe and the other protectors of their false leagacies need to pray for themselves and ask forgiveness for letting a pervert run around on campus for years. Acting like they did not understand or know the extent of what he did rings false. The Gand Jury report is clear, Penn State knew what was going on and did all they could to make it go away. Two things should have happened: 1) Someone should have taken a bat to the head of that pervert while he was in the shower with a 10 year old, or 2) called the cops immediately and reported a crime in progress.

It is hard to argue with that....allegedly they had the opportunity to stop it several times and they did not. They just told him he was not allowed to bring anymore kids to the school...I guess they thought that would solve the problem ,I find that disgusting don???t you.

Paterno said that the info McQueary gave him was vague and didn't involve any of the specific details that eventually came to light. Nobody involved in the investigation has said that Paterno knew the details. A few hack journalists have theorized this, and even go so far to present it as fact, but that's it. So Paterno gets some information... vague, but disturbing enough to cause concern. He goes to the Administration and tells them about it. The Administration looks at it and ultimately drops the ball (at best) or intentionally covers it up. Why should Paterno be fired for this? Which is the more believable scenario for you guys: Admin uncovers the details and decides to bury it, they ban Sandusky and wash their hands of it (cover it up). Administration can either 1. Go to Paterno, tell him the graphic details of the child abuse and tell him that they are going to intentionally cover it up. Paterno agrees to go along with it, lies to a grand jury, but is not caught. OR 2. Tell Paterno that they contacted the authorities and it was in their hands. Or that it was otherwise taken care of. This has gotten completely out of hand in terms of the Paterno angle.

I agree with Crimson 02. Just because the upper management of the school did nothing you don't just stop. Reporting it to the police was his responsibility as a human being. Fell quite a bit short.
As to the students supporting him, probably none have kids (they know about). Just another reason to throw a party at Penn State.

Joe Pa. What a disgrace. They tried to fire him years ago and he said he wasn't going. How didhe get more power than the Chancellor?

Only a child molester would defend Joe Paterno now. He knew his guy was a child rapist and, like the current Pope, he covered it up rather than report it to the police. He should spend the rest of his life in jail, but at least he'll spend the rest of eternity in hell (like the current Pope, who also was once a member of the Hitler Youth).

Love your stance and your reasoning. I have a 17 year old Son and this kind of situation does not stir up my " oh its okay he is a sports legend " thoughts. Lets just say the truth - BIG FAIL Joe-glad they turfed your *** today
