Well, now that the Angels have seemingly shored up their front office, their focus shifts to free agency. Who should they sign? Should they make any trades? One thing the Angels lack is a dominant bullpen. There's two very good options that the Halos could look at; Ryan Madsen and Heath Bell. Either one will immediately patch up the Angels bullpen. Either the Angels feel comfortable with Jordan Walden as their closer and sign Ryan Madsen to be their set-up guy OR they don't feel comfortable with Walden and sign Heath Bell to be the closer. Going from 86 K's in 2010 to 51 last year is a little bit of a concern, and the Angels need to be careful, especially given their past history signing bullpen help. (See Rodney, Takahashi, and Downs.) Their next priority should be the back end of their rotation. I'm not sold on Tyler Chatwood, and I think Garrett Richards needs another year at AAA to develop. Jerome Williams impressed me last year going 4-0 in his 6 starts. He could develop into a very good #4-5 option for the Angels, but they're going to need one more. There are some very tempting FA pitchers out there, including Yu Darvish, CJ Wilson, and Roy Oswalt, but I don't think the Angels should go for any of them. I think they should sign 1-2 or the cheaper starters. Maybe a 1 year deal to Jeff Francis or Paul Maholm on a 2-3 year deal would go a long way for the Halos. There's only one more spot I'd like to see the Angels address, and that's Catcher. Although I'd like for Hank Conger to be the Angels starting catcher going forward, I'd like to see the Angels sign a suitable back-up to avoid a season of futility at catcher like last year. There's really only one option I'd like to see here, and it may upset some people, but I want the Angels to sign Jason Varitek. Yes, he's on his last legs, but he can still call a great game behind the plate and plays good defense. His offense may not be all there anymore, but it's still better than Jeff Mathis.

Ok... so the spacing didn't work.

Can't say I agree with most of this. If I'm the Halos, I make a strong run at CJ Wilson. You have about 20M to spend and he will take around 10-11. When you add him, you have Weaver, Haren, Wilson, and Santana=Dominant.

Then, you can try to trade Santana for a bat. If you can't find fair value, then you have the best top 4 in the big leagues and can sign a cheap starter with your remaining money.

Finally, you need more of a bat this year than Varitek. He's done. I would say Ryan Hanigan or Ramon Hernandez. Both can hit and would take the "easy out" out of the Angels offense.

That is under their budget and the best team you can have.

My idea was to use Varitek/Conger platoon. Conger can learn so much more from Varitek than anyone else.

That being said, I like what the Angels have done this offseason more than my ideas.
