UC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Golden Eagles are on quite a roll, having won nine consecutive games. UC is 11-6 overall and 8-2 in the WVIAC so far.
"They're very confident in one another and in the team,'' UC head coach Sherry Winn told the Charleston Gazette recently. "And they listen to me. They're coachable. I can make changes at halftime. I can go in there at halftime and tell them what I want done, and they'll do it.''
Emily Jones (11.5 points per game), Veronica Carman (11.2 ppg) and Jihan Williams (10.5 ppg) lead in scoring for UC while Tarenna Dixon, Katy Arick, Jennifer DeMeyer and Ali Tobias have also made significant contributions for the Golden Eagles.
UC will travel to face another hot team in Fairmont State on Thursday, Jan 24. The Fighting Falcons have won 11 straight games and are 13-1 overall, 7-0 in the WVIAC -- good for first place in the league. Fairmont is ranked No. 18 in the nation according to the latest D-II women's basketball poll.
The Golden Eagles will go to Salem International on Saturday Jan. 26 before returing home to tackle Seton Hill on Thursday Jan. 31. UC will hit the road again to face Wheeling Jesuit on Monday, Feb. 4.
UC MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Golden Eagles (10-4 overall, 4-3 WVIAC) are coming off a successful week at home, winning two of three games including an 80-74 victory over West Virginia State University and a 87-78 win over Pitt-Johnstown, handing the Mountain Cats their first league loss of the season.
"We've had an emotional week,'' UC head coach Greg White told the Charleston Gazette. "To beat two of the better teams in the conference this week is big. Even though we lost to Wesleyan, which was disappointing, this got us back. You just never know what's going to happen.''
UC has won six out of its last eight games.
Robert Strickland (18.7 points per game), Marquis Brooks (16.4 ppg), John White (11.4 ppg) and Austin Weatherington (11.2 ppg) are the top scorers for the Golden Eagles. UC is averaging 87.6 points per contest, second best in the WVIAC, and the Golden Eagles allow opponents only 77.8 points per game. Strickland is among the WVIAC leaders statisically, ranked sixth in scoring and fourth in rebounding.
The Golden Eagles have a busy schedule ahead for the next two weeks. UC will travel for three consecutive road games beginning at Fairmont State on Thursday, Jan. 24, Salem International on Saturday Jan. 26 and Concord University on Monday, Jan. 28.
