After watching Colorado pull off an unexpected, albiet not too surprising, upset over Utah to end the regular season, two thougts crept into my mind.

"Great, now we get to see a 6 and 6 UCLA team play in the first ever Pac-12 Championship game"

"Although, did Colorado winning help this forced rivalry between the two mountain schools move towards becoming a true rivalry, one the fans and players actually care about?"

It's hard to get too excited about playing someone that you tend to beat every year and that your expected by everyone to beat every year. I can't imagine too many Tennessee fans get as excited about the Vanderbilt game in the same way they get up for Florida, Bama, or UGA. It's just difficult to get up for a whipping post, even if that team is your instate or border rival.

I'm pretty sure most Utah fans thought beating a two win squad at home wouldn't be too much of a challenge. But Colorado thought they'd mix things up a little. USC will still be the victory of choice for Utah, but you can bet the seniors next year will have the game in Boulder circled.

Rivalries shouldn't be forced, they should be created. Hopefully Colorado just sparked a new line of hatred between two schools that actually have a lot in common.

It will take more than one upset to get this thing to be the Ohio State, Michigan game of the mountains, but a Buffs victory progresses the rivalry much faster than if the favored Utes had done the expected.
