I have a riddle for you.
Why would Mark Cuban not want Chris Paul to go to the Lakers and Pau Gasol to go to the Rockets.
Tough one isn't it.
The whole CP3 situation pisses me off, and I am **** sick of small market teams bitching and moaning about what the GOOD teams do. I have a suggestion to all you whiners out there who run NBA teams. Suck it up and BUILD your **** team.
Maybe the the reason your team sucks Whale dick (Dan Gilbert) is because you're too busy bitching about what the Lakers or Heat are doing instead of, I don't know, looking at ways to improve your god awful team.

competitive, the Spurs were a dynasty, the Bucks are a play-off team,
Phoenix is still a very good team, and the Jazz were a fixture in the
play-offs for over 2 decades.
It's not like there's no way to build your team. There's a draft and there's free agency. Find quality players. Don't be mad at the Lakers because they have their eyes on the prize. They may have more money, but that doesn't mean **** if you don't know how to use it. Smart people make the most out of what they have, and if you can't then maybe you shouldn't have let your parents use you as a softball as a baby (Dan Gilbert).
You can't control were players want to play. If they leave your team, then you have only yourself to blame. If LeBron had won 2-3 titles in Cleveland, do you think he would've left? I don't think so, but because the Cavs were run by Morons, he left to go to a team that knew what they were doing. Really, you didn't want to give up JJ Hickson to get Amare Stoudemire? That was a really smart move wasn't it?
The point is, if your favorite team is a pathetic joke of a franchise. Don't blame the Big markets, don't blame the system, and don't blame the super stars. Blame the idiots who make all the stupid decisions that confine your favorite team to mediocrity.

One difference stands out to be is that some teams (big markets) have more money to spent.
Second the NBA owns the Hornets, and thus all significant decisions lay with the commissioners office. He didn't feel like it was in the best interest of the team.
Paul is not a free agent thus he is at the mercy of the owner (NBA) on whether they want to trade him..

I think it would still depend on what the Hornets got in return. The commissioner was just trying to protect the teams best interest. If the league doesn't have competitive balance then no one will want to watch the same few teams winning all the time. It's probably in the CBA if someone wanted to look it up.The bigger question is why hasn't the NBA found a buyer in the year since they purchased the team?
