I was not a big fan of Les Miles until the Alabama game of 2010 in Baton Rouge. After seeing LSU defeat Alabama with trick plays by Les Miles, I began to rethink my opinion of Les Miles as a good coach for LSU. After all he had just defeated Nick Saban, the coach that most people are calling the greatest coach in college football today and LSU was winning more games than expected in 2010.
Additionally, Les Miles was recruiting very well again and following the Cotton Bowl victory over Texas A&M, LSU was heading into the 2011 season as a pre-season top 5 team. Not only that but LSU was picked almost even with Alabama and that is always good news for the average Tiger fan.
After defeating the Crimson Tide and being ranked # 1 for most of the year, most Tiger fans thought we not only had the best team, but many believed we had the best coach in the SEC.
But, as the BCS Title Rematch game approached most experts were saying Alabama would win because Nick Saban would have 6 weeks to prepare for Les Miles and LSU. Boy, as the game began you could certainly see how much better Nick Saban had Alabama prepared than did Les Miles.
In the first matchup, LSU came away from that game feeling they could run the option on Alabama since they had found success doing that. But, Les failed to consider that Nick would make corrections for that flaw in his defense and this would no longer be a weakness for Alabama. Les basically did not change anything from what he did in the first game, while Nick Saban made corrections to stop everything LSU did to them in the first game. It was a classic case of Saban just totally out coaching Les Miles on both sides of the ball, and LSU appeared to be totally unprepared for Bama in any manner.
From the very beginning, you could see LSU had problems with Jordan Jefferson and his nervousness, as he fumbled the snap back from center on the third play of the game. Jefferson never got comfortable all night and his performance along with the entire offense was bordering on pathetic. They could not run or pass, and the special teams even struggled in their performance.
As Jefferson continued to struggle with paultry and pitiful offensive stats, the Tigers went three and out with a punt all night. Each time they gave the ball back to Alabama the Tide just moved the ball up an down the field to score field goals. Depsite the defenses efforts and hard play, the offense just struggled all night and they were forced to be on the field so much that finally they wore down near the end and gave up a TD to Richardson.
Both fans and media experts were amazed that Les Miles just watched Jefferson struggle time after time while he made no move to bring in Jarrett Lee to throw the ball. After each series in the second half, you would think we would be seeing Lee come in, but he never got the chance. Miles has always stuck with Jefferson no matter what and he just refused to make the change in this game to help LSU have a chance to be the greatest team in it's entire history. Les Miles let the fans, his team, the school, and Jarrett Lee down by failing to try to win this biggest of all games in LSU's long history of football.
Due to the coaching job that Les Miles did in this game, I have now found myself returning to my former opinion of Les Miles and wondering how he has ever achieved the record he has. Could it be that LSU's players have been so great that they simply have carried Les Miles ? With the coaching preparation and game time adjustments that Les Miles made you can only conclude that this year's Tiger Defense must have carried this team to a 13-0 record.
Like it or not, LSU will be stuck with Les miles for at least another 4-5 years as he just signed a new contract. Whether Miles can hire the proper OC and then allow him to run the offense, or just continue to recruit well that is the only hope the LSU fans will have.
By losing the Alabama game in such an embarrassing manner, LSU has basically turned Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide into a run away train in the SEC and it will be very hard to catch them again. I just hope Les does not turn into a Charlie McClendon where LSU wins 11 games and loses the Alabama game every year.
