The NFL Mock Draft Database has been updated and a post free agency mock munch is completed! First, for the stats. The NFL Mock Draft Database has hit a whopping 400 mocks drafts. Good stuff considering we are still in March.
For the first time since the original mock draft database hit the Web for the first time 14 years ago, mock draft writers are absolutely unanimous on the Top 3 projected picks. I have never seen that before. In the past, occasionally, we have seen a unanimous number one pick, never really this early. By mid-April, in past years, we have seen a unanimous first overall pick, particularly when negotiations begin between the top team and the top pick. But, we have never seen mock writers make unanimous projections for the first three picks. Until this year.
A trade and NFL free agency has changed the landscape for nearly every mock draft. No doubt, mock drafts were shaken by the Washington Redskins trade to the number two slot with the St. Louis Rams. Previously, mock writers were split between the Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Browns trading up to the number two slot with the St. Louis Rams to grab Baylor QB Robert Griffin. That debate was flattened by the Redskins trade up to the second slot. NFL free agency has also impacted mock drafts. It likely isn???t over yet either. So stay tuned. Surprisingly, the biggest leap came at the number three slot with the Vikings. Our last mock munch, 52% of the mocks had the Vikings selecting OT Matt Kalil. Kalil is by far the best offensive tackle in the draft and the pick makes a heckuva lot of sense. The Vikings drafted QB Christian Ponder in the first round last year, but in order for Ponder to become effective, the Vikings need to protect him. Kalil can be a big part of increased protection for Ponder in his second season. What is surprising is the leap in mock projections from 52% in mid-February to unanimous in the current database.
We munched together the most updated mock drafts that were updated between March 14, one day after the commencement of NFL free agency, and today. Thirty-eight mocks updated since March 14 and all 38 mocks project QB Andrew Luck to go first overall to the Indianapolis Colts, all 38 mocks project the Redskins to select QB Robert Griffin second overall, and all 38 mocks project the Minnesota Vikings to select OT Matt Kalil.
