"The Stack" is back on this Wednesday and unfortunately, there is not a ton of big headlines out there. We've scraped up a few so enjoy this shortened version of "the stack" which starts right for today, Wednesday, March 21:
1. Broncos introduce Manning
Peyton Manning is officially a Denver Bronco. The team held a press conference yesterday to make the announcement. Manning's contract is five-years, $96 million. That seems like a lot considering Manning is coming off neck surgery and is getting older, but Manning, when healthy is one of the best quarterbacks in the game so it's not too bad of a deal. Manning is guaranteed $18 million this year and he can make more in subsequent years by passing physicals and with incentives.
Among the highlights of the press conference, Manning said that he has spoken to Tim Tebow only once, and if he's on the Broncos, Manning will be the best teammate possible for him. If other opportunities present themselves for Tebow, Manning will wish him the best of luck.
You knew that question was going to come sooner or later and Manning answered the question with class and gave the politically correct answer. Manning is normally genuine with his comments so I don't expect that answer to be any different. Manning also talked about his relationship with John Elway and how he will be working with the training staff as much as possible to get back to form and ready for the season. He seemed eager to get to work, but I'm sure a part of him is still wishing he was an Indianapolis Colt.
One way or the other, the dawn of a new era has begun as Peyton Manning is a Denver Bronco. Look out for the Broncos San Diego, Kansas City and Oakland. There's a new sheriff in town.
2. Other NFL headlines
The Houston Texans traded linebacker DeMeco Ryans to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fourth round pick. The teams are also swapping their third round picks. I have no earthly idea why the Texans would trade one of the best defensive players on the team. Money? They've already lost Mario Williams to Buffalo. This is a pretty big blow to the team and their fans. It's a great pickup for the Eagles who are thin at linebacker. Ryans immediately helps them. Texans fans are left scratching their heads...San Francisco resigned quarterback Alex Smith to a deal. The 49ers have to breathing a sigh of relief that they were able to land Smith back after their chase for Manning failed and Smith was talking to Miami. Smith blossomed under Jim Harbaugh last year. With the weapons he has now, expect him to take another step forward...And Hines Ward retired Tuesday, saying that he will always be a Steeler for life. Ward was a very tough and physical player when he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He helped define who the Steelers were and are today. He got under a lot of opponent's skin because of how tough he played. Maybe he was dirty every once in a while, but he always played tough. I still don't know about the Hall-of-Fame though. It's more a matter of "if" to me, not "when." Looking at his stats, they're good, but I'm not sure they're HOF good. That's going to be a really good debate in the next few years.
3. Other headlines...
In the NBA, the Miami Heat rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Phoenix Suns 99-95. LeBron James had 20 points and Chris Bosh had 29 points. The Heat have now won fourteen straight road games. While the Heat rallied, the Lakers sunk, blowing a fourth quarter lead to the Houston Rockets, losing 107-104. After winning five straight, the Lakers have now lost two in a row. With how up and down this team is, don't expect them to make it far in the playoffs.
To the women's basketball tournament we go and Brittney Griner has done it again. She dunked it in Baylor's 76-57 over Florida. With her size, I'm surprised Griner hasn't dunked it in a game more often. Still, with how few times it has happened in the women's game, it's still impressive. Griner is head and shoulders the best player in women's basketball, but there is one player that may have an argument. That is Elena Delle Donne. The baller from Delaware scored 34 points and grabbed ten rebounds against Kansas, but her team los 70-64. Delle Donne is a great player and it is unfortunate we could not see her play another game in the tournament.
