Much has been written and said about recent (i.e. 6 years) success of the SEC in football, and well-deserved. The SEC has won 6 straight BCS championships. Some young fans even seem to think that it's always been that way, that it will always be that way. Not true.
A quick look at Top 25 finishes shows that it wasn't so long ago (1999-2002) that the ACC was a better football conference than the SEC - the best in the nation in fact.
What happened? Around the time of the 2 big TV contracts between the SEC and (1) CBS, then (2) ESPN, the SEC began siphoning off players and coaches from the ACC.

In particular, since around 2004 (when the ESPN contract began), every move in the SEC line is pretty much the opposite of the ACC line. This is a zero-sum game; for one conference to win, the other has to lose. The nemesis of the ACC in football is clearly the SEC...
