Every couple of weeks I will plan posting this news and notes blog to keep everyone update with what's going on with Texas State athletics.
Of course next week we will have a blog on the football recruiting class. So far I am very please with what I am hearing. I think some of you 1-A FBS folks might be surprised as well to see the amount of talent that is coming to Texas State for next season and beyond. There will be some real improvement in speed, especially on defense where it is needed the most.
Both basketball teams are doing well. The women's team is 5-1 in conference and has a big television game tonight (Thursday January 31st) on Fox Sports Southwest against Stephen F. Austin. A real effort has been made by the athletic department to raise the turnout for this game and they are doing a "white out" for the arena. Most of the time I don't really like gimmicks but the goal here is to impress people tuning in by the size of the crowd and having seen games where the crowd is all in one color really looks impressive on television. This is also a big deal because it's the first ever women's televised game from Strahan Coliseum so if you are around a TV tonight at 7pm central time tune in.
The men's basketball team continues to be up and down. After a great win at UTSA Saturday night 79-73 the ‘Cats are bombed by Stephen F. Austin 81-65. The SFA win isn't a huge surprise because they are one of the top conference team this year but I was hoping the score would be closer. The men are now 10-10 on the year, 3-4 in conference play. In order to make it to the Southland tournament the men will really have to step up their play.
This Saturday is a big one for both the men's and women's teams. It's Stuff Strahan with the women playing at 2 and the men at 4. Both games are against Sam Houston. A women's win keeps the ‘Cats tied for first with UT-Arlington and a men's win would be a huge boost for this program since Sam Houston is another top team in the conference.
