I'd just like to say, I'm a huge fan of both of these guys. For a boxing fan, they are a breathe of fresh air. haha The heavyweight division use to be the cream of the crop, it's just not anymore. The United States has gotten use to the "little guys" persay, of the last couple years. Mayweather, he's looking to go undefeated, and also at the same time, not blemish his record. It's a known fact, that Mr. Mayweather, as a great as he is, has his manager Ellerbe pick his fights to supreme precision. No diss to Cotto, he's in his prime, and a future hall of famer in my opinion. Pacquaio, this guys a phillipino work horse. Pacman has the heart of a champion, literally. Pacman's angles in the ring, like no other. Floyd and Pacquaio squaring off, INSANE. Everybody and their mom has been talking about it for like 3 years now. Pacquiao I believe is 33, and Mayweather, 35, respectively. I just dont know, these guys have so much more than can do than box. Floyd, he's already starred in a WRestle Mania. lol Floyd, he could just take snapshots on 50 cents' latest trash cd. AS far as Pacquiao, I think he might still do his political thing. Both have proven they are #1 and #2 in their era, well, pound for pound. With Floyd's big fights coming back to back, and Manny's new religiion, i just don't see them doing it till they're 40 or anything. like i said, neither has to. When these two guys retire, they are going to devastate boxing. Looking at the pay per view buys.. Look at these two "cash cows".. Sure, Boxing won't be "dead", like mma faithful use to say, but it will take a MAJOR HIT, and I mean Major.. The next future hall of famers that come up, they might need a spiked bat, and a combat mentality. haha Manny and Floyd are the "IT" factor in boxing, no question abou it. I wrote this to give them their due, and tell the truth, at the same damn time.
Two interesting fights on Pch'es radar, excluding this weekend's Bradley and Pacquaio fight: Chisora vs Haye, riot anyone? "you f'n glassed me"-Chisora.. AND Ward vs Dawson..
sincerely, Dan Rafeal Jr. lol

We will do the same thing as when Sugar, Hearns and Haglar retired. And the same thing when Oscar De La Hoya was on the backside of his career. We will look to next batch of stars. You think the promoters will just on their hands and not create the next big star? Pch don't be so short sighted like the people who hate on boxing. It wasn't long ago that no one knew who Pac was and Floyd was just another fighter. The right promotion and some high profile wins and you have your next star.
Did you watch Froch vs Bute last weekend? The place was packed and the fight was great. Forch has a huge following and it looks to me there are plenty of other guys to look to. Mexico and PR both have young stars coming up. A friend and I where going over the the top 10 in each division and the sport is pretty young with a lot of good fighters coming up. The 2012 Olympics will give us another batch of great amateurs to start their pro career as well. We are in great hands.
Top Rank will create another star out of their stable for you to talk about just like they did with Oscar, Floyd and Pac. Nonito Donaire can pick up where Pac left off and Ward can be a nicer, cleaner cut Floyd. Alvarez will be the big draw for the Mexicans and Puerto Rico is a boxing factory. Gamboa once he gets done fighting with Top Rank can be a star. Demetrius Andrade is a rising American and Jose Benavidez Jr. might be a name to keep in the back of your mind. The 140 and 147 divisions are restocking with Khan, Bradley, Peterson, Alexander, Alvarado and Rios will be joining them as well.
Also have you watched Adrien Broner? Kid has flash and all the tools to be a top P4P fighter. He has the "it" factor you are talking about. Gary Russel is another talent that is from the USA. We even have a heavyweight that I might get excited about and no it isn't Seth Mitchell [he got exposed in his last fight I think]. Bryant Jennings has the look of a real heavyweight boxer. Exciting style, great power and showed some slickness. The K brothers are on their way out, this kid might be able to compete with the other young heavyweights coming out of Britain and Russia.

we will watch even less boxing, which i don't mind. MMA is where the true fighters are at now. Boxing has become a dead sport because of mayweather's childish refusal to fight pacquiao. As good a mayweather was, we all know he pee's a little bit everytime he thinks about how good pacquiao is.

Boxing takes agility and strength. MMA is sanctioned street fighting and the fighters lack the coordination required of boxers. PCHY has a point that boxing needs someone to keep it going so that it doesn't fall by the wayside and get replaced by street fights.

Quit ragging on MMA.
If you think that's just 2 guys swinging at a bar, you are just as uneducated about the sport as John McCain.
I'm a fan of both sports and both sports have good and bad parts.
Great blog, but the future of Boxing is going to be a niche sport. I just think there are too few people that can capture a crowd. Hispanics seem to be th future in America, but Europe may come to dominate the top 10s of most weight classes.

Nice job, Peachy.
I think Canelo with be a huge star. As for the American scene, guys like Arreola simply don't have widespead appeal. And even a talent like Andre Ward coming off the Super 6 won't remain in the spotlight for long.
I'm looking forward to the London Games this year to scout if there's anybody interesting in the on deck circle.

Broner has everything America looks for in a star.

Boxing and MMA are both niche sports now. That won't change. People for a large part to don't like watching two people beat the hell out of each other.
With the growing Hispanic population boxing will be fine. In boxing there has always been a couple of stars that transcend the sport, guys who have the support of their country and than the rest. That won't change.

I love how MMA fans (including their UFC king, Dana White) do nothing but rag on boxing (like calling it a niche sport), then complain when anyone has anything negative to say about MMA and its fighters.
As a boxing fan, I can appreciate MMA and enjoy watching some of the fights, but there are a couple of points I'd like to make:
1. Ground fighting, in my opinion, is not enjoyable to watch. Looks too much like my college roommates getting drunk and fighting in the bathroom. I prefer fighting where the fighters get up after a knockdown (if they can).
2. Claims by MMA fans that MMA is safer than boxing are largely unfounded. They are based on the theory that most of the damage in boxing is cause by an accummulation of smaller blows (i.e. Doo Koo Kim) and having smaller gloves and quicker intervention after knockouts removes this concern. However, given what has been learned about concussions in recent years, that underlying assumption is flawed. There's no evidence that these hard knockouts are in any way safer.
3. I enjoy boxing for the skill as much, if not more so, than the violence. MMA fans seem to prefer the violence. That's not to say MMA doesn't require skill, but is based on my perception that fans flocked to MMA in part because they didn't find the combat of boxing matches compelling enough, meaning they wanted more hard hits and more knockdowns (i.e. more violence), and by extension, fewer decisions.

mikeycook you do make a point how MMA fans are always taking jabs at boxing but don't take it so well when they get it back.
I agree that ground fighting isn't that enjoyable but I some seem to like it. To each's own.
I would say MMA is a little safer but I don't watch boxing because it is safe. I watch it because I don't think any other sport tests every attribute of an athlete as well as boxing does. I love to see how different styles mesh as well.
A punch in MMA comes no stronger than in boxing. Yes the gloves are bigger but that isn't the only difference you need to consider here. First people should know the gloves are there to protect the hand and not the head. It actually allows them to throw with more force and that 4oz of extra cushion isn't much. They found when they went to gloves they could actually punch harder with no fear of breaking you hand. The biggest thing people don't realize is that in boxing you are wearing shoes. The ability for the fighter to sit down on his punches getting leverage with the rubber soles of his shoes far outweighs the extra 4 oz of cushion on his hand. To someone who hasn't trained might not understand this but think of running, can you do it faster and push off better with shoes or barefoot? Same goes with throwing a punch.
MMA has had more kayos because a lot of their guys don't have as tested a chin as the average boxer but this is changing as the sport matures. Guys get title fights even today with less than 20 fights. That is just getting started in boxing. You chin hasn't been tested all that much with less than 20 fights.

Take it from someone who boxed for 3 years and has covered MMA
You are insane if you think a 4oz vs 16oz makes no difference

I boxed as well and when did you wear 16oz gloves boxing? Those are training gloves and big for even that. Boxing gloves are 8 and 10 ounces in the professional ranks.
The difference of the padding in the glove is not as significant as not wearing shoes. When you aren't wearing shoes you can't get the leverage as when you do. Take it from someone who spent 3 months in a gym before throwing his first punch. Can't punch if your feet aren't under and positioned right.

Berto is done as a big name fighter. He never had public appeal and the steroid thing is going to kill him even though I heard there might actually be a legit explanation [haven't heard it yet]. Berto isn't good. He simply refuses to learn head movement. He will be a gate keeper type of fighter I think.
Maidana is great for brawls but will always get beat by guys who can box. He is already on the backslide of his career.
