Ted Keith recently wrote about the no hitter thrown by 6 combined pitchers on the Mariners staff against the Dodgers.
He says that the feat was amazing, historic, etc... and it truly was. But I happen to find a complete game no hitter by one pitcher more impressive. First, let's look at the parts of this no-no that WERE amazing:
- Seattle is terrible this year, the Dodgers have been very good
- Six pitchers means six different guys have to be on their "A" game all at the same time
- The six pitchers for Seattle aren't "studs" or guys you'd expect to shut down a team
That said, there are several reasons why I'm more impressed when one guy does it, as opposed to multiple pitchers. One of which is that the aura of a pitcher on his game seems to be more distinct than a staff having a good night. I compare it to one player having a great night at the plate and hitting say 3 HR and getting 8 RBI. I remember that for quite a while, but I don't remember if an entire team is hitting well and put up say 6 HR and 14 runs collectively. Both are awesome displays of offense, but it just seems more special when one player does it. Some other reasons:
- More pitchers means more things the hitters need to adapt to. Different speeds, different pitch selections, etc...
- Fatigue. One pitcher gets tired as the game goes on. Multiple pitchers always means a fresh arm.
- Tendencies. As a game goes on, you can figure out what the pitcher is doing. You might see him rely on a certain pitch in certain counts or situations. You can get "lucky" by doing some scouting the longer the opportunity to watch. New pitchers means no pattern.
Seattle had a great night and I can't take anything away from their performance. It was top shelf pitching (maybe combined with an off night offensively for LA). What do you guys think is more impressive?

I think there have only been 10 combined no-nos.
A very rare feat.
