During the off season many of the so-called baseball writers (and a couple of FN members who are resentful that Giants fans got to celebrate a world championship while their teams perpetually underperform) all wrote off the Giants due to a lack of offense.
Well the Giants are in first place behing not just great pitching but also offense. In the past 4 games the Giants pitching staff (the best in the majors, even with Brian Wilson on the DL) has thrown 4 shutouts against first place teams.
How did the offense do? They just scored 8 runs on Monday, 2 (with 8 hits) on Tues. off Clayton Kershaw, 3 (with 10 hits) on Wed. and 5 off Reds ace Johnny Cueto last night.
As of today Melky Cabrera is hitting .355, Pablo Sandoval is hitting .306 and Buster Posey is hitting .300. Angel Pagan is right behind at .295 and over the past month Brandon Belt has been hitting over .300 with 4 homers. Looks to me like an offense most teams would be envious of. What is funny is one of those FN critics constantly lambasting the Giants during the off-season because he thought Cabrera and Pagan weren't going to boost the Giants offense. Just shows that too many people open their mouth way too often, only to insert their foot.
As things stand right now, Tim Lincecum is getting back into his groove, Matt Cain, Ryan Vogelsong, and Madison Bumgarner still dominate most games they start and Barry Zito has a winning record with a shutout in his last start.
The second half of the season looks to be a march to another division crown, and very likely another pennant. The only team that may stand in the Giants way would be the Nationals (in the playoffs) but the Giants have playoff experience on their side, as well as a better top to bottom pitching staff.
