Florida State once finished in the top 4 rankings every year from 1987 to 2000, with 2 national championships. Then something went wrong. First Chuck Amato, then Mark Richt left to take jobs as head coaches elsewhere. Offensive production started to drop, then defensive points allowed started to rise.
