There is no doubt in any Penguins fan's mind - at least there shouldn't be - that Shane Doan is the best option for the Pens at this point...hell, anything is better than Tyler Kennedy on Sid's wing. He's been getting it done his entire career with the same franchise and he wants to stay in Phoenix, but it looks like Greg Jamison is $20 million short from buying the Coyotes to make sure they stay in the desert. That means it's about to become open season on Doan's bank account.
The Pens should be all in on Doan but if the whole Zach Parise thing tought us anything, it's that Ray Shero better have a backup plan ready incase Plan A doesn't happen (see Steve Sullivan). Rumor has it Doan is looking for a 4-year/$30 million deal - that's a $3 mil per year raise...kind of crazy for a 35-year-old. But of the favorites to land Doan (Pens, Kings, Sharks, Canadiens, Rangers, Flyers), only the Rangers have more cap space ($11.7M) than the Pens ($9.9M) to work with - what else are they going to use that for, Carlo Colaiacavo? Doan didn't swing by the Burgh to visit with the Pens though after he met with the Flyers and Rangers - what does that mean?
If Doan does decide to pass on the Pens' offer, Shero can't be caught with his pants down because as soon as Doan goes, there will be another mini frenzy of signings once he's off the market. If that happens, Shero needs to be ready to spend his cash elsewhere, and a familiar face like Petr Sykora could be the perfect fit.
But wait, there's more...
