As day 9 of the Olympics begins there have been many surprises, upsets, and victories won by large margins. Lets start with Michael Phelps, he was expected to become the most decorated Olympian of all time, but he also struggled towards the beginning of the games. His first race, against rival Ryan Lochte, in the 200 meter individual relay he came in a disappointing 4th place, failing to even get on the medal stand. After that, he came 2nd in two events, his favored 200m butterfly a nail bitter to the wall but Le Clos was able to finish stronger. The team relay was also disappointing, as they had the lead heading into the last 100m, but teammate Ryan Lochte, was chased down by Yannick Angel to win gold for the French. After that, Michael Phelps was golden, winning 4 more golds (two in relay's), Yesterday, he finished his last swim of his Olympic career winning gold in the 4x100 relay. In his 200 IM, he was able to beat Lochte and win gold. He is the greatest swimmer of all time and his last race was truly remarkable with people such as Kobe Bryant, his coach and his mom all watching over him.
But, Phelps wasn't the only star at these games, other swimmers include rival Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin and Allison Schmidt all winning gold in there respective events. Lochte was able to beat Phelps in the 200 meter individual relay and will most likely be one of the better swimmers in Rio. In women swimming, Missy Franklin has shown the future for American swimming winning gold and setting a world record in her favorite event the backstroke. Also, the youngest American Olympian at age 15 Ledecky was able to win gold in the 800m freestyle upsetting the heavily favored veteran from Britain.
Team USA in basketball, has always been a heavy favorite in winning the gold. They have some of the greatest players like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant. They say they are better than the 1992 dream team in which Michael Jordan led to a gold. Although, they had some very easy games such against Nigeria where they won by over 80, when playing Lithuania yesterday, they were clearly struggling. Lithuania was actually winning by two with 6 minutes to go, but have no fear when you have King James who scored 9 points in 4 minutes and was able to hold of Lithuania. Team U.S.A should go on to win the gold, and if they didn't that would be a huge disappointment and Michael Jordan would have a little laugh.
Lastly, in Gymnastics a hugely favored event in America Gabby Douglas was able to bring home gold against the Russians who got silver and bronze. Although, Jordyn Weiber didn't make the all around competition which brought tears to her eyes, she had a gold in the all around competition which she played a huge part. The Gymnastics team did not dissapoint especially Gabby Douglas.
While the track events started yesterday, today will tell who the fastest man is, whether it is still the 26 year old Usain Bolt, Justin Gatlin or Tyson Gay who has raced against Bolt many times. The worlds fastest women Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce beat American Carmelita Jeter by .300 of a second, to take the title of the world's fastest women.
These are some of the major events that have happened so far, the era of Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt may have finally ended at these games in London. As of right now, China leads the way with 61 medals 30 being golds; the U.S right on their tail with 59 medals, 28 of them being gold.
