The only friend you have when you walk onto the field is your partner. Greeted by mostly boos from the crowd, the only respect you get from both sides is before the contest starts, before any strikes call, and safe or out on the base paths. Another real problem with the job at certain levels of baseball the coaches don't know the rules. A lot of time when that happens here comes showtime fot the coach trying to show up the ump, but most of the time he just gets the fans fired up.
You have to love this job because if you are in lower level minor leagues, you have low pay, no vacation, stay in cheaper hotels, and travel by car. This is the only job I know of when you are only right 50 per cent of the time. In a lot of the times you are a hero one minute and a goat the next minute. But the whole key of being successful is knowing the rules, explain your calls, be in good position to make calls, and always hustle. At the end of the night you can wlak off the field with your head held high knowing that you have done all of the above right. But you know there is another game the next night and again the boos will come and you are The Man Who is Never Right.
