What a team: Me, Paul Pfanner and DeDe Henry. Well, without John Benton, the Publisher and financial backer, we would have been nowhere. John provided the money, the rest of us made the magazine happen. - - - - It was a trip of a lifetime: An adventure to say the least. - - - - To this very day I recall the challenge and was nearly overwhelmed. What did I know about magazine publishing? Nothing. I knew about sales; advertising sales to be specific. I knew about racing and had a vision that matched my partners. The three of us, along with John, went on a fantastic voyage. - - - - We created a credible monthly auto racing magazine, nearly from scratch. We learned about publishing and getting the magazine out to the public. Had help from some of the greatest: An Encyclopedia Britannica mail order guru (John's family owned Britannica. He was CEO of the Educational Film division). - - - - We brought on great people: Jeff Hutchinson for Formula One and Two; Gordon Kirby for Indy Car and F5000, and a bunch of really young talent: Loring, Sproule, Waddell, Czaja and the list went on and on and on. We were on fire. True. - - - - We got interviews, stories, personal input from some of the greatest in motorsport. Folks like Dan Gurney and Chris Pook on the race through the streets at Long Beach, Ca. It was a thrill, to say the least. Here we were, three 'little' people on top of the auto racing world. Hot damn, it was good. - - - - We had monthly articles from some to the greatest drivers in nearly every series. No publication had what FORMULA Magazine had. And credit must go to other friends as well: Dave Stewart, Dennis Roberts and God only knows how many others that helped make FORMULA Magazine what it was in the day. - - - - Paul Pfanner, with recovering RACER Magazine as his own, has recouped the day and brought our original vision from the 1970's to real life. And a hell of a job he's done. - - - - Way to be Racer Magazine
