I believe the driver has main control. He can deny or he can admit to a problem
He (or, please sometimes she) has the reins and the responsibility to make an intelligent call. It stands directly on the driver - no one else. In the Earnhardt case, he finally made a good decision to sit out some races. And, he should be credited with that proper resolution.
I find no reason whatsoever to discredit NASCAR.
For those in the anti-auto-racing media allow me to offer this: You know not this sport; you have not the slightest clue. Go play your little 'stick and ball' game garbage somewhere else.

The video of activity in Jr's car, during the Talladega Big one, shows that he sustained at least 5 strong head jerks.......this was his 2nd in a few weeks.......a 3rd one could leave him brain damaged.
Ray Evernham disclosed last Sunday that he had to stop racing due to 3 concussions in a row.
Rusty Wallace admitted that he continues racing after a concussion, but it affected his performance.
We could go on and on with racing names.
I totally agree that Jr, Mr. Hendricks and Nascar, (who all support Jr), are doing the right and the best thing.
Any blow to the head, should never be taken lightly....just ask actor Liam Nesson what he thinks of concussions.

Concussions are a big deal in sports these days. Both the NFL and NHL have taken flack over the seriousness of concussions and the results of multiple concussions one former players. And both organizations have started taking steps to diagnose and protect players who have received a concussion, and with all the safety advancements NASCAR has made over the past decade many outsiders to the sport are probably surprised NASCAR hasn't stepped up and "done more" for its drivers.
I would argue the very nature of concussions, and head injuries in general, are still a little known phenomena in sports and medicine. Yes doctors know what causes most concussions and how to treat them, but Dale Jr's didn't show up on his scans. So how do doctors diagnose that beyond "the patient just didn't feel right."
And UncleHubie, you are correct that the athlete has control over if/when they compete next, but in today's sports world whether it be NASCAR, baseball, football, etc. contracts and sponsors control a lot of what the athletes do. Had Mountain Dew/Pepsi insisted I have a feeling Dale Jr would have been in the car at Charlotte and this week at Kansas. In fact I bet Jr had to clear the time off with them before making the announcement.

I would never delete a post for an individuals comments regarding what I write and believe. It would have to be very offensive. I did however delete your multiple posts with your approval.
Regarding Dale Jr. staying in the car at insistance of sponsors - I can't get into that. First, I can't believe they would even ask - the fallout would be disastrous if discovered - and it surely would be.

LittleE~BigMT fan - Thanks for your input. These guys, no matter what sport, need to understand that nothing is more important than life itself.
Are you referring to the concussion Liam's wife suffered in a skiing accident, and died of it?

Yes, I am referring to that.....his wife, actress Natasha Richardson, fell while skiing and was ok at first......then suddenly dizzy, massive headache, rush to hospital, where she died of a brain hemorrage....(March 18/2009).........all this within a few hours of the fall...........she would be alive today if the concussion was recognized and dealt with immediately.

What people don't understand is all brain injuries are different, so is concussion recovery. Most people with mild injuries recover fully, but it can take time. Some symptoms can last for days, weeks, or longer. As for Dale We ALL will have to wait along with him to find out what it's going to be. Good Blog Uncle Hubie.

The race cars are safe in that no one has been killed in over a decade, but they still get banged around a lot. the HANS can only do so much. I got 2 kids in sports and their stuff is tamer, but the wife and I are very watchful of head injuries, even the mild ones.
Agree with you SLY and others. Concussions are very individual and it's a wait and see for Jr.

Thank you. I did mean the extra comments. I know I tend to write a book with my responses and I am sure no one wants to read through them three times!

There's nothing I enjoy more than a "full" view (wordy) on an opinion. I read every word of every post to my blog. I digest it and more times than not have a comment. - good, bad or indifferent. And, you additional comments, are appreciated.
So, who kicks butt in Kansas? And please, don't miss my post which will be up shortly, on NASCAR's Hall of Fame inductees. The dust will never settle.
