Welker and Harrison played their hearts out in defeat. As a team, the Patriots played as well as they did in three prior Super Bowl victories.

It truly was a shame and a disgrace in watching Bill Belichick leave the field with one second left. He owes his team - and the Super Bowl champion Giants - more respect than that.

Bellicheat just can't stand to lose. What a gamee it was and what aperformance by the Giants.Congrats giants.

February 4, 2008  07:44 AM ET

yeah i saw that too; i think Belichick chose to leave the field b/c he had already exchanged the customary postgame handshake with Coughlin. doesn't really matter though.......i think the loss was just too much for his ego to handle.

Noone expected the "Perfect Patriots" or the "Greatest Team Ever" to lose the Super Bowl. Belichick is not a classy guy, as he has shown before and last night. He has his heart in the right place because he is so competitive and so focused on winning that his emotions get to him. But he never talks to the media and when he does he doesnt answer many questions. Even when the Pats were undefeated he still always looked pissed off. Obviously the Patriots as well as there fans cannot except defeat and are going to make up millions of excuses of why the lost and how they can lose one game and not be the Champs.

February 4, 2008  08:10 AM ET

exactly what was the problem with Belichick acknoweldging the game was over with 1 second left and Giants possession?

This is pathetic. The hatred and namecalling and insults continue even after they lose?
Y'all just cant be satisfied with an I told you so?

Pathetic.

February 4, 2008  08:18 AM ET

Belicheater - out coached and out classed. How you feel about blowing off the field goal attempt now Bill? Arrogent call and set up his kicker for failure in the event he needed to attempt last second gasp effort. Walking off before the game was over - brutal. Stand there and take it like a man. Support your team. I guess he couldn't wait to go fire his latest videographer.

February 4, 2008  08:27 AM ET

G-MEN ARE THE BEST !!!!!! Bill Belechoke left the lenscap on his video camera. Tom Brady is overrated, he got smacked in the mouth all night, and Gisselle left him because she don't date LOSERS !!!!!!!!! Oh, and I really HATE Boston :)

February 4, 2008  09:25 AM ET

take it easy KP......don't tell me you're surprised by any of that?! you KNEW the haters wouldn't be satisfied with just insults.

February 4, 2008  09:50 AM ET

100% correct in everything. The coaching, the playing, the Giants were better than the Pats in every aspect of the game. And Bill represents the organization in a wrong light because of this. This loss is gonna sting this whole franchise, and especially Bill for a long, long, LONG time.

February 4, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Aaah, they agony of defeat.

February 4, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Um, Cooz, I expect better of you...

...Belichick walked out and not only SHOOK Tom Coughlin's hand, but also had a lenghty conversation before being ushered back to his sideline to conduct the last snap...

February 4, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Sorry KP, I don't think anything I wrote is unfair or untrue. He does not get a pass simply because he congratulated Coughlin. That's standard protocol at the end of every game. He deserves to be called out on it because he did it in full knowledge that the game was not officially over.

All that says to everyone is he is more important than the game itself, and he gets to decide when it's over. He should have stayed his a@@ on the sideline until the clock read zero. Instead, he took the glory of the moment away from the Giants, and created a way to shift the focus off their stunning achievement.

If Mike Tomlin did the same thing upon losing the Super Bowl, I would have written the same thing. If Coughlin did that, I would have written the same thing.

Please don't mistake my post for hate on your team. As a fan of the NFL, I didn't appreciate the actions he took at the end of the game. The Patriots played a great, classy game, and it was truly fantastic drama throughout. They have nothing to be ashamed of, but Belichick certainly does.

If you don't agree, I think you're taking it personally, and you shouldn't.

And I fully admit I gave the Giants 100 percent ZERO chance of winning that game, so I am not reveling in any sort of "I told you so." I simply am in awe of how great of a game it was, and am amazed at what the Giants were able to accomplish. But Belichick intentionally ruined part of it by trying to upstage his opponent, and how he wasn't man enough to be on the field for the full duration of the game.

February 4, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Um...Ben? No, he was not on the field for the last snap. Again, shaking the opposing coach's hand is standard ettiquette, and my post did mention that he shook Coughlin's hand. However, several reports have already indicated Belichick was not on the field for the final play, which is a fine example of extremely poor sportsmanship. Winners aren't defined by the amount of wins they have, but how they are able to lose with class. Leaving the field early can never be construed as anything other than low class.

Great blog, Cooz. Glad to see more of your work.

Perhaps we've seen the last of Belichick as a coach...especially if he gets whacked with the one year suspension.
