Day 64 of the NHL lockout. The two sides are scheduled to meet tomorrow to resume negotiations. Frankly, I don't what to think about all this. Earlier this week Commissioner, Gary Bettman announced that both sides were going to take a two week break from labour talks and now they have decided to resume negotiations again. What a crazy situation this is.
Meanwhile, there is hockey being played elsewhere. There was three games that I watched yesterday.
The most interesting and intense hockey game was the Hamilton/Toronto game of the American Hockey League. Man! did these two teams went at it. The Marlies ended up winning it 6-1, but there was plenty of drama. It was obvious to me that these two teams hate each other, which is no surprise when you consider both cities are in Southern Ontario. There were a lot of fights in this game. The biggest battle happened in the second period when Hamilton's Zack Stortini pounded on a Marlies player who was on the ice. Stortini got a slew of penalties, including a game misconduct. Out of all that, Toronto got a six minute power play. It just goes to show that this type of hockey doesn't only happen in the NHL. You just have to put two rival teams together, in any hockey league, to get this type of intensity.
Keith Aucoin scored two goals for the Marlies. Marlie's Nazem Kadri racked up four assists during the game and Jake Gardiner got two.
There was OHL hockey yesterday afternoon. Niagara defeated Ottawa 4-2.
The last game I watched was a NCAA game between Wisconsin and Minnesota. Minnesota won 3-1.
Well, we now know who will compete for the Vanier Cup next week. It will be between Laval and McMaster. Laval defeated Arcadia in the Uteck Bowl yesterday 42-7. McMaster defeated Calgary in the Mitchell Bowl 45-6.
To be honest, I think McMaster will the title. From what I saw yesterday afternoon, their defense is just too good. I think Laval will have trouble breaking through it just like Calgary did.
Only one baseball note.
After trading away a portion of their roster to the Blue Jays earlier this week, Miami has decided to signed at least one player. The club has signed Juan Pierre to a one-year, $1.6 million contract.
