I was a kid in North Chicago suburbs, and have lived in St. Louis, San Antonio, and Houston.
First Chicago - Cubs, White Sox, Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls and I think there's an MLS soccer team, and a spattering of satellite minor league baseball teams in the area. All are well supported and have a national presence. ( oh, yeah, Chicago has real, barehand softball too ) -- Great Sports Town ?
St Louis - Cardinals, Rams, Blues. My opinion is St. Louis as a baseball town. The Rams and Blues get planty of fan support, but it's the year long love affair with the Redbirds that sets it apart.
San Antonio - Spurs bay-bee. Spurs own San Antonio. No questions asked.
Houston -- Astros ( I think there's an MLB team here ), Rockets, Texans, MLS Dynamo. This is a football town.
What I think are great areas for their sports franchises --
Boston / New England area --- Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox, Patriots. If there's a winning reputations, seemingly always in contention, and rabid fan base, this is right up there.
New York - 'nuf said. the only question that remains is Jets or Giants. Chicago North Side / South Side, Cubs/ Sox, I understand. Jets / Giants someone will have to educate me.
Denver - Broncos, Rockies, Nuggets, Avalanche. Always heard Denver is a great sports town. Broncos have plenty of history, and the Rockies have a good draw. Maybe it's the Colorado demographics and geopgraphy that propagate the great sports town rep.
Bay Area - Giants, 49'ers, Raiders. Sacramento Kings are close but I've heard there are facility issues, but sports town ? Should be. Lots of winners and great history.
Pittsburgh - this might be it. Steelers, resurgent Pirates, and Penguins. Just off the top of my head, the Steelers own Pittsburgh. Cool that all three teams have the same colors.
Detroit -- Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons. wow. back in the day Detroit kicked butt. It probabaly was a great sports town. All those teams rocked, and contended, and won.
Dallas - Rangers, Cowboys, Mavericks, North Stars. Great Sports Town ?? not so much.
Who's on your list --- Great Sports Towns, good sports towns. My jist is metropolitan areas. Lincoln, Nebraska great in the fall, but a one horse town. Who's on your list.....hometown bias is accepted at this window.
overall - ??
Have at it.......

The Bay Area might be expanded to Northern Calif. I grew up in the Bay Area and now live in the Sacramento region. The Giants and 49er fans come from all over N. Calif. In fact very few of them actually live in SF. The Kings still have a loyal following in the Sacramento region but that is fading fast as the team's owners have done all they can to alienate the fans (poor drafts, rejection of all arena deals except a fully publicly funded deal). Raider fans are an embarrasment to the rest of us.
