Look at Alex Smith, this man brings them to the brink of the Super Bowl last year, has a really good record this year 13 tds and 5 interceptions, always finds a way to get down field and win games in the clutch and hes not starting? I hope Harbaugh has a plan like he is resting his head so he is 100% for the playoffs. Or they are letting Kappernick start a few games until he is on his A game again? Because this is what we see with backups, they win a few games in spectacular fashion and then they just burn out quick. Recent example would be Kevin Kolb who finagled a 20 million dollar contract off of 4 games with the Eagles, heck Brett Farve 10 yrs from now could have done what Kolb did with that Eagles O-Line, you know the one thats not there anymore just ask Mr Vick. Or John Slkelton with 2 tds and 5 interceptions this year. Another example of a player who was winning but was replaced for doing their job would be Jeff George when he played for the Mn Vikings, replaceing Randall Cunningham and going 8-2 in the regular season and then winning the first game of the playoffs just to not be resigned by Dennis Green the next year because they only offered him 1.4 million dollar deal and was told to shop around. He ended up signing with the Redskins for 14.5 million dollars the next yr but was replaced by coach Marty Schottinheimer for Tony Banks. Tony who? lol. Remember Jeff Garcia? He always posted a winning record but was cut by the 49ers and the Eagles, oh speaking of the Eagles how about Mcnabb after getting deep into the playoffs in 2008 being tossed to the Redskins where Tom Brady couldnt even lead these guys to a playoff game with the awful defense year after year. The point is the NFL should stand for Need A Frontal Lobotomy for the awful personel decisions made year after year. Alex Smith wont be the last player to win big just to get injured and lose a opprotunity to play for a great team only to end up out of the league or heaven forbid you end up on the Cardinals, Lions or Redskins or Dolphins or replaced and benched for some guy who does great for four games and then crumbles. In life and in football coaches, bosses wives, girlfreinds etc never seem to recognize a good thing when its staring you in the face. So the lesson here people is no matter how good you are chances you will be replaced by some one not as good, smart, strong or wealthy as you are, I mean even millionaries and movie stars get dumped so what chance do regualr guys have in this world.
