Day 103 of the NHL lockout a nothing new to report.
There was, however, World Junior hockey action yesterday morning.
Yes, like many other hockey loving Canadians, I got at 3:45 am to watch Canada and Germany square off at 4:30 am in Ufa, Russia. Canada hammered the Germans 9-3. All in all, it was a pretty good performance from Canada, but they do have some loose ends that must be fixed in order to win gold. There were times they played really sloppy in their own end. Elite teams, like Russia will make them pay dearly for some of the mistakes they made yesterday. Their powerplay also has to get better. I think they went one for four. Canada plays Slovakia next. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got five points (1 goal, 4 assists), Ryan Strome three points (1 goal, 2 assists), Jonathan Huberdeau three points (1 goal, 2 Assists), Jonathan Drouin two points (1 goal, 1 assists), Mark Schiefele two points (2 goals), and Brett Ritchie two points (2 assists). For Germany: Leonhard Pfoderl two points (1 goal, 1 assist).
There was some AHL hockey yesterday afternoon. The Toronto Marlies edged the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-2. Matt Frattin got two assists, Mike Kostka got a goal and an assist for the Marlies.
There was an upset yesterday at the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland yesterday. Alder Mannheim defeated Team Canada in overtime 2-1.
I have some sad news from the baseball world. Former Texas Rangers owner, Brad Corbett passed away on Monday at 75. He was the Rangers owner from 1974-80.
Pittsburgh have acquired Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimentel, Jerry Sands, and Ivan De Jesus from Boston. In return, the Red Sox get Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt.
The New York Yankees have signed Matt Diaz to a Minor League contract.
The New York Mets have signed Aaron Laffey to a Minor League contract.
