I have to agree that finding the right amount of pre-season practice time is quite the science. Too little and you're unprepared and out of shape---Too much and you become complacent and risk injuries before the season even begins. So what's the right recipe for number of pre-season practices and games? I think it is completely contingent on the individual players and the team dynamic when those players come together in those first few weeks. Like the article " Enough Practice for some is too much for others" points out these guys no longer require pre-season games and practices to get in shape. They are showing up in their prime having had the entire off-season to train--both mentally and physically. Ultimately, the decision has to be left in the hands of the coaches and their ability to read their players. You can tell when your team looks sharp and is ready to take the field, when they need a few pre-season games to shake them up---or when they've had too much time and have become less hungry to play given all of the time that still stands between them and the official kick off. However, with the probability of injury, mental lethargy, and as of recently, off field criminal acitivity increasing during that long pre-season it seems in the best interest of everyone to just get to the heart of the season. Pre-season is like the opening band---they are pretty good and you watch for a while but when it goes on too long all you can think about is where the hell is the part of the show I came here to see?
