It's official: the World's Worst Football Picks' pick for the 2012-2013 Super Bowl is the Baltimore Ravens.
That means, of course, that you pick Baltimore at your own peril. We don't call these the World's Worst Football Picks for nothing.
Why the Ravens?
First, because I like the Baltimore deep passing game against the Niners corners. Joe Flacco throws a great deep ball and he's got the receivers, in Torrey Smith, Anquan Boldin and Tandon Doss, to go get it.
And, if San Fran has a glaring weakness on defense, it's at the corner position. Neither Tarell Brown nor Carlos Rogers can match up one on one with Smith, Boldin or even Doss, which will force the Niners either to play zone or give them safety help deep, which will open up space in the middle of the field for the Ravens' tight end and backs.
I expect Smith to rack up 150 yards with a touchdown while the bigger, more physical Boldin will have more catches (8 - 10) for fewer yards (120) but two TDs.
Second, I think the Ravens defense has the talent from sideline to sideline to slow Colin Kaepernick and the varied Forty-Niner offense down. While most defenses have to play a scheme to take away one or two of Kaepernick's options, Baltimore has the talent simply to play the Niners straight up, dealing with whatever comes its way, rather than trying to scheme their way to a win.
I think we'll see a lot of Frank Gore and Ray Rice in the early going but my feeling is that, by the fourth quarter, you'll see a lot of Kaepernick trying to run while Flacco, Smith and Boldin start to dissect the San Fran defensive backfield.
Final score: Baltimore 31 San Francisco 20.
