The Stack joins you this Thursday with a couple of things to talk about, not too much though. No need to overwhelm. Let's get right to it and see what made "the stack" for today, Thursday, February 28:
Alex Smith traded to Kansas City
The NFL year doesn't start until March 12, but when it does, one trade will become official quickly. The San Francisco 49ers traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for a second round pick in this year's draft and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Smith's career turned around when Jim Harbaugh came two years ago and he was playing really well this year prior to his concussion that saw him lose his job to Colin Kaepernick who has since become a star. The Chiefs are getting a good quarterback, but the strange thing is is that Smith was probably the only real option out there. Where else would the Chiefs have gone? They tried to get Nick Foles from the Philadelphia Eagles, but that really didn't look like it was going to happen. When Michael Vick went off the market, then there weren't any other decent options out there. Smith is an upgrade in KC where Matt Cassel will be cut (don't be surprised if he ends up in Arizona). Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Flynn still may be available in a trade and then there is that Tim Tebow guy that is looking for work. So there are a couple other players out there, but none like Smith who in a weak free agency quarterback class was the top guy and will go to Andy Reid and the Chiefs.
The 49ers with the addition of the Chiefs second round pick now have fifteen picks in this year's draft. They are going to dominate the draft and they are in great position to move up to get players that they covet. This team looks like they are ready to take over the NFL and there are rumors that the 49ers are targeting New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis. Stay tuned. The 49ers are not going away.
One other quick NFL note, Colorado tight end Nick Kasa says that one NFL team asked him and I quote, "do you like girls?" That makes the NFL uncomfortable and they are investigating. They'll levy a punishment against whatever team said that. Please don't let it be the Vikings. It's also against federal law to ask questions like that. Curious to see who this team is.
Penn State wins first Big Ten conference game...against Michigan!
A team winless in conference play in college basketball at this point is looking for any win at this point. Don't care who it is against, just want to win. Penn State was in that boat until last night when they stunned Michigan (a trendy team to get a #1 seed) 84-78. The win snaps an eighteen game conference losing streak. Fans stormed the court. Penn State basketball hasn't done anything in years so this is definitely a moment for fans to savor. This absolutely came out of nowhere. No idea how Penn State found a way to pull this one out, but they did. Michigan's hopes of a number one seed, at least at this point are gone. If they win the Big Ten tournament, they can get right back on the one line, but that is what they'll have to do to get there. Jermaine Marshall led all scorers for Penn State with 25. Congrats to the Nittany Lions on this win. It's been a frustrating season. Enjoy this one.
Finally before I go, what a night for Steph Curry. The Golden State Warriors point guard had a monster night, scoring 54 points in a 109-105 loss to the New York Knicks. They were really close to winning this game. The Warriors are a good team and could do some damage in the playoffs.
