With all due respect to the Chicago Blackhawks 24 game point streak ending last night 6-2 to the Colorado Avalanche and the Miami Heat extending their win streak to 17 games following their 102-93 win over the Philadelphia 76ers, The Stack is here on this Saturday to talk college basketball and preview some conference tournaments that start so let's get right to it and see what made "the stack" for today, Saturday, March 9:
Colonial Athletic Association tournament preview
It's been kind of a down year for the CAA as they tip off their tournament today in Richmond at the Richmond Coliseum March 9-12. Northeastern is the favorite, but I say don't sleep on George Mason, the four seed. I think they could potentially win this tournament. Still, the conference desperately misses VCU who jumped to the Atlantic 10 this year. They would have added more respecatibility to the conference tourney. As it is, I'll take Northeastern to win this one.
Summit League tournament preview
The Summit League tournament, my bread and butter, is going to be epic this year. The top four seeds all have legit chances of winning this tournament. South Dakota State has Nate Wolters, one of the best mid-major players in the country. Western Illinois plays some of the best defense in the country. North Dakota State is getting Taylor Braun back and healthy after missing the past couple of months with a foot injury. And Oakland features one of the best three point shooters in the country in Travis Bader. This is going to be a fun tournament and I think South Dakota State will pull it off. Wolters is a star and he will carry this team to the tournament championship.
Atlantic Sun championship prediction
As predicted, #1 seed Mercer faces off with #2 Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun conference championship at 12:00 PM ET on ESPN2. This should be a really good game. Remember both teams were seperated by a mere one game during the regular season. FGCU is good, but Mercer is the better team. I like Mercer to win the Atlantic Sun conference championship and punch the first ticket to the NCAA tournament.
Ohio Valley Conference championship prediction
As with the Atlantic Sun, the OVC championship game features #1 vs. #2 as Belmont takes on Murray State. Whoever wins this game has a real chance of winning a game in the NCAA tournament. Murray State isn't as good as they were last year, but with Isaiah Canaan, nothing is impossible. Belmont's style of play could really give teams fits in the NCAA tournamen and they are a good shooting team. Because of that, I like Belmont to win the OVC championship.
