"What they did in Memphis is beyond comprehension," said Popovich. "There should be a trade committee that can scratch all trades that make no sense. I just wish I had been on a trade committe that oversees NBA trades. I'd like to elect myself to that committee. I would have voted no to the L.A. trade."

When told that Wallace had challenged executives to criticize the deal publicly, Popovich replied, "Well, there you go. I'm on the record."

The above is an exerpt from:

Now, given Pops made this comment less than a week after the Spurs benefited from the buyout of Damon Stoudemire's contract by none other than the same very Wallace that Pops is criticizing here, doesn' this make Pops a bit of a hypocrite?  After all, it seems like Wallace's motivation for buying out Stoudemire was at least partially the same as his motivation for trading Gasol, with that motivation being saving $$$$.

From ESPN:  "it's believed that Memphis was asking Stoudemire to surrender a significant portion of next season's guaranteed $2.3 million to secure his release."

And it's important to note here, that $2.3 million was just his guaranteed money for next season, not his whole contract. He was earning $4.35 million this season from Memphis and was due to make $4.65 million next year. That being said, between the remainder of this year and next, Memphis probably saved about $5 or 6 million by buying him out rather than have him finish out his contract.

If Pops wants a committee that reviews all trades, maybe that same committee should review all buyouts, too.  Is the  Lakers deal for Gasol any worse than a contender like the Spurs very conveniently getting a vet PG for nothing?  After all, at least LA had to give up essentially 3 first rounders and a 2nd rounder in addition to Kwame in order to fill their need caused by Bynum's injury.  What did the Spurs have to give up to fill their need created by Tony Parker's injury?  $335,442, the veteran minimum salary, pro-rated for the remainder of the season.  They didn't give up a single player or draft pick to add a veteran PG and address a burning need.  Sure, they did it in different ways, but they essentially did the same thing as LA.

The Spurs took advantage of Memphis' desire to cut payroll just as much as the Lakers did, which Pops very conveniently ignored when he expressed his outrage over the Gasol deal.

Perfect 360 well said! I really don't think Pop was thinking when he spoke, given how emotional he is! He's scared just like all the other WC GM's who were just hoping for the Lakers to evaporate further rather than rebuild so soon. Don't they know the history of this franchise? Obviously not!

He's just afraid of what the Lakers will be when they get Andrew Bynum back.

GO LAKERS!

February 10, 2008  05:26 AM ET

Yeah, scared AND probably a little jealous.

The Spurs are still obviously among the favorites to win it all, but I think Pops realizes their window is starting to close. And maybe he thinks it just started closing faster when LA picked up Gasol.

Yah!!!scared to the bones, knowing that his SPURmates are getting older ,while my LAKERS are getting better, with the anticipated return of MR. Bynum, kiss that BACK2BACK aspirations MR.papabitch, COZ THE laker MACHINE IS COMING.

Come on coach' get over it after all your spurs are the favorites to win it all.
GO LAKERS!

February 15, 2008  09:24 AM ET

....you moronic laker idiots are the one's that need to get over it! Pop very seldom makes any thoughtless remarks that, for him, are out of character, and who are the first to be all over it. You sniveling, pill-popping, dope-smoking, laker-lover trash. Oh-it was "funny" when Phil-do makes retarded one-liners about the homosexuals he is surraounded by in California.....or, it's perfectly excusable when a laker rapes a white woman and comes to terms with himself and the victim with an out court settlement. All of you are simply FOS. Period.

hey... slow down on the adjectives there.. =] the lakers got better but its still early to guarantee a laker championship. we still dont know how bynum would be when he gets back.

pop was ranting about what he thought was a lopsided trade and he never said anything about signing of players who were bought out. also stoudemire choosed to sign with the spurs, he wasnt dealt to them by the grizzlies

dymonhed, you are the definition of moron. All your insults are simply childish and are an indication that you are mad that the Lakers got better. Quit defending Pop, he is a hypocrite and is mad because the Spurs are not gonna have an easy time trying to win another championship. Its losers like you that make Spurs fans look like a**holes. Just shut your mouth and go to some other blog with spurs fans in it, because your rhetoric is not wanted and ridiculous.
