So The Stack obviously did not post yesterday as I was intending too. Picks in yesterday's games were decent going 13-3 though I have already lost one of my Final Four teams as New Mexico lost to Harvard 68-62. A #14 seed over a #3 seed! That's why the tournament is so good. Don't think I'll be picking New Mexico again for quite some time. And there were some great finishes yesterday like #3 Marquette getting a layup to avoid the upset to #14 Davidson 59-58. #6 Memphis squeeked by #11 St. Mary's 54-52. #12 Cal hung on to beat #5 UNLV 64-61. Hope for more great action today. Let's run through the schedule and make some picks in "the stack" for today, Friday, March 22:
#15 Albany vs. #2 Duke 12:15 PM ET CBS (Philadelphia) Midwest Region
Duke is a solid pick to make the Final Four and perhaps win it all this year in large part to getting big guy Ryan Kelly back. They'll get by Albany pretty easily.
#12 Ole Miss vs. #5 Wisconsin 12:40 PM ET TruTV (Kansas City) West Region
Saw two 12-5 upsets yesterday. Will we see another in this game? Ole Miss can do it only if sharp-shooter Marshall Henderson carries them. He's an electric yet sometimes controversial player. Wisconsin's defense I think will be too much for Ole Miss to handle though.
#9 Temple vs. #8 NC State 1:40 PM ET TBS (Dayton) East Region
Temple, as good as they are in the regular season and the A-10 tournament, struggles when it comes to the NCAA tournament. NC State has underachieved so far this year, but they have more talent than the Owls.
Pick: NC State
#15 Pacific vs. #2 Miami (FL) 2:10 PM ET TNT (Austin) East Region
Miami surely is playing with a chip on their shoulders, thinking they deserved a #1 seed. Perhaps they should have. They'll have no issues with Pacific.
Pick: Miami (FL)
#10 Cincinnati vs. #7 Creighton 2:45 PM ET CBS (Philadelphia) Midwest Region
Creighton has the best player on the court in Doug McDermott. Cincinnati struggles offensively. Creighton may not be as good as some thought they would be earlier this season, but they'll get by Cincy.
#13 LaSalle vs. #4 Kansas State 3:10 PM ET TruTV (Kansas City) West Region
LaSalle looked pretty good in their first round game against Boise State. They'll give Kansas State some struggles, a team that I think is a little overrated. But Kansas State will find a way.
Pick: Kansas State
#16 James Madison vs. #1 Indiana 4:10 PM ET TBS (Dayton) East Region
Hope James Madison enjoyed their win Wednesday night, because Indiana is going to make this ugly.
#10 Colorado vs. #7 Illinois 4:40 PM ET TNT (Austin) East Region
Intriguing matchup here. Illinois has show at times that they can beat the best in the country. Colorado has also shown flashes at times. Pac-12 has represented well in the tournament so far. Colorado keeps it going.
#15 Florida Gulf Coast vs. #2 Georgetown 6:50 PM ET TBS (Philadelphia) South Region
Georgetown has struggled in the NCAA tournament since they made a run to the Final Four back in 2007 in Atlanta, where the Final Four takes place this year. Does that mean Georgetown is going to make a run to the Final Four? Perhaps, but they keep getting upset in the tournament and don't be surprised when FGCU does it. They beat Miami (FL) earlier this season. I'm going Georgetown, but won't be shocked when they lose.
#15 Iona vs. #2 Ohio State 7:15 PM ET CBS (Dayton) West Region
The Big Ten champions are looking like a good pick to come out of the West Region, especially with New Mexico losing. They shouldn't have too many troubles with Iona.
Pick: Ohio State
#9 Villanova vs. #8 UNC 7:20 PM ET TNT (Kansas City) South Region
UNC has been a disappointment for much of the season, but has played better as of late. They have more talent on their team than Nova in my opinion and wouldn't a third round matchup with Kanssa just be awesome?
#14 Northwestern State vs. #3 Florida 7:27 PM ET TruTV (Austin) South Region
Last time NW State was a #14 seed, they knocked off Iowa back in 2006. Florida you've been forewarned.
#10 Oklahoma vs. #7 San Diego State 9:20 PM ET TBS (Philadelphia) South Region
James Franklin is a great player for the Aztecs. Oklahoma perhaps has gotten to the tournament a year ahead of schedule. I think SDSU can pull this one out.
Pick: San Diego State
#10 Iowa State. vs. #7 Notre Dame 9:45 PM ET CBS (Dayton) West Region
Iowa State has a fantastic offensive set that should be able to get by Notre Dame. Head coach Fred Hoiberg has done a great job shaping this roster.
Pick: Iowa State
#16 Western Kentucky vs. #1 Kansas 9:50 PM ET TNT (Kansas City) South Region
Not completely sold on Kansas, but they have more than enough to get the Hilltoppers.
#11 Minnesota vs. #6 UCLA 9:57 PM ET TruTV (Austin) South Region
This is the 11 over 6 upset that a lot of people seem to like. Minnesota has a ton of talent and they can rebound the ball like very few other teams in the country. UCLA is without their point guard Jordan Adams and that will hurt them in this one.
Enjoy March Madness. It will only get better. Might see you Saturday for more picks in the round of 32.
