This is an article I submitted to a writer at the Star-Telegram of Fort Worth, Texas, warning against the spiritual ramifications of the NRA sponsoring a NASCAR race.
This man (ironically sharing the name of a famed Christian singer) and his suicidal gun death was predictable (http://www.star-telegram.com/2013/04/14/4774398/saginaw-man-fatally-shoots-self.html#storylink=cpy)....
I am a media coordinator and producer for my group. I also do a lot of ministry work; so I am against things like alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. I am also against terrorism.
However, I am a big fan of NASCAR and as you can see, was just credentialed to cover the race here in Vegas. For example, before mentioning the NRA...Miller Lite, Jack Daniels, Budweiser, etc. are all sponsors of NASCAR and that sends a message, to a demographic who is impressionable, that drinking and driving mingle; that it is acceptable and NASCAR condones it. It is destructive to both the sport and the fans and "drinking and driving don't mix."
Now, tobacco, same situation; in a way, NASCAR is rooted in the Bible-belt, but also "Tobacco Road." And with all I will note; NASCAR is the most sponsor/ad driven sport in the world! I've even added a couple of pics of a woman and a pit crew member smoking during a race right in the pits. Forget the health of the persons, but that is an explosion waiting to happen...
Now, on firearms, this may seem extreme; but, where there are guns there is violence and violence with guns leads to the US being the most murderous nation on Earth! The stereotypical NASCAR supporter, may well be the pick-up driver with a gun rack and a "cold one" in his hand smoking a cigarette. Those are a nightmare to humanity. Now, I do love NASCAR and I hate the NRA. And this may be extreme, but the NRA is a "civil" terrorist group. It would not take much; as much as I love the media accessibility and the infamous fan accessibility to NASCAR even on race days; but I can see a gunman or terrorist targeting the pits at NASCAR and doing that which guns were made to do....kill; or blow-up the place!
I don't believe (just) people kill; I believe people and guns kill since I have yet to see anyone die from having a bullet thrown at them.
