The first card of the off-season was played by the Carolina Panthers as it has been widely circulated through various sources that the Panthers plan on resigning defensive tackle Damione Lewis. The 6′2 301 pound defensive tackle has been primarily used as a backup for the Panthers, playing behind Kris Jenkins and Maake Kemoeatu. However, Lewis, a former first round draft pick for the St. Louis Rams, did contribute on defense with 32 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

Lewis, who didn't realize he was being resigned until being contacted by local news media, was thrilled with the news.

Despite playing mostly in a reserve role, Lewis registered 32 tackles and shared the team lead in sacks with 3.5 last season.

The 6-foot-2, 301-pound Lewis has backed up Kris Jenkins and Maake Kemoeatu in each of the last two seasons and likely will return in that role this year unless the Panthers decide to unload Jenkins. The team unsuccessfully attempted to trade Jenkins last year.

"I'm really excited to be back," Lewis said. "I like the atmosphere in Carolina and the coaches, my teammates, the entire organization is a class act. I also like the defensive system I'm working in. It fits me."

Lewis was an important cog on the defensive side of the ball. However, the main focus for the Panthers is still to find a way to resign Jordan Gross.
