Great Racing Everywhere From the Derby to NASCAR to IndyCar
This is my opinion of the weekend of racing - not a race report
What happens in a Nationwide NASCAR race when most Cup drivers stay out of the fray? You get a great race from the young guns. Allow me to suggest that if Cup drivers, Logano, Kayne and Kurt Bush, had also stayed home the race would have been even better. They STOLE the lions share of the purse, nearly $100,000 that could well serve the regular series drivers.
Was a great win for ex-Cup regular Regan Smith in the JRMotorsports Chevy he drove a good race. Man, that Pastrana guy showed some pretty good stuff - pole, leading laps - well, then crashing. But what the heck?
I got a kick out of Danica Patrick 'skittering' around the incident she had with Kyle Larson. Ultimately saying the cause was his lack of experience. Please, Danica talking about "lack" of experience? She must wear some funny glasses. Patrick has won only a "single" race in her entire professional career and hadn't driven in the new Nationwide cars. What Kyle has done in his short career is nothing short of amazing. And, guess what? He "earned" every single win.
NASCAR CUP at Talladega - the short story
It only took about eight hours to complete the race but when it came down to the end (50+laps) it was the brawl everybody expected at 'Dega.' Small team teammates, David Ragan and David Gilliland powered their way through a bunch of "big" boys and took a fantastic one-two finish. Very well deserved and certainly earned.
Miracles happened - KyB actually admitted to making a mistake - has to be a first. Danica nearly duplicated her Nationwide finish with an astounding 33rd (accident) - of course it wasn't her fault. Not a miracle, but Scott Speed ran one hell of a race with his underfunded, one-car team to collect 9th - made me smile - I like Scott. It pained me to see Trevor's Ford engine go down in flames because in my mind he's the epitome of what we need in a NASCAR driver.
Was the race at Sao Paulo, Brazil the best race of the season? You bet, it doesn't get much better. Last turn, last lap move by "Hinch" overtaking Sato was what open-wheel, street racing is all about. James Hinchcliff (the Mayor of Hinchtown) has done in just one and a half seasons what Danica Patrick failed to do in her IndyCar career - deliver a win for sponsor GoDaddy - and now he's done it twice. Folks, there's a reason Patrick went to NASCAR - her time was up in the open-wheel series.
They've been running this race for 139 years. It's taken what seems forever but finally the "Phipps" family connection made it and collected the roses. Orb gave young jockey hotshot Joel Rosario his first Derby win and the first for trainer Shug McGaughey and for the legendary Phipps family. Historic to say the least.
MAJOR NASCAR REVELATION
The top two finisher in the Cup race at Talladega when doing their interviews first thanked God for the opportunity provided them. And, there were no drivers that declared they where homosexuals.
